Tikka
This past Saturday my wife and I went to a local car show. As we strolled around I saw the usual "suspects" i.e. the muscle cars, old "boats" and new cars that looked like they just rolled off the sales floor. I also saw many "fast and furious" type rice burners. However, nothing spoke to me like the cars I've been seeing on this forum. In my opinion these "rice burners" lack character and soul. My wife made the comment that most of their owners looked like part of the same snot nosed rich kid club. They probably never turned a wrench. Just have mommy and daddy pay someone to do the assembly. I believe the word I'm looking for is poser. Although I'm new to the Datsun scene I have to give you all credit. The cars here have all required time, effort, imagination and elbow grease to come alive. Hell, simply finding parts is enough to make most throw their arms up and surrender. I'm not trying insult anyone. It's just my opinion. It's sort of like having an original indian motorcycle. There are so few out there and we got one. Hats off to you all. 8 Quote Link to comment

EastBay521
Blood, sweat, stress, cash, tears, and alot of homework/headache is what it takes. For me the heads I turn and the people I fuck with on the freeway makes it all worth it. Its amazing how driving like an asshole can really brighten up my day 3 Quote Link to comment
racerx
Datsuns are very unique and the vast majority of people that had them back in the days will speak fondly about them. My 510 is a daily driver and I say on average 4X a month, people will give me a thumbs up on the freeway or streets. They can't believe that people are still driving them around. I still remember like maybe 1 a year a go, a guy followed me home and wanted to buy my car for his son and of course I said sorry not for sale. These cars are simple and functional and yet has a zen beauty about them 1 Quote Link to comment
Tikka
Makes me excited to get mine running and on the road. Unfortunately, the weather is about to change in my area and I haven't finished with it. Guess I'll use the winter to take my time and do things right. If nothing else it will help spread out the expense. 1 Quote Link to comment
Jesse C.
Nothing like being up all night swapping out a clutch, going to bed smelling like gear oil and then waking up an hour later to drive two hours to sit in a parking lot! Yes, this is the joy of old cars and turning your own. 3 Quote Link to comment
flatcat19
Every show I have taken my 521 to, excluding Datsun shows/meets, has been a field day for memories. One show, probably 150 people told me a Datsun story of when they had one or their parents, high school buddy, etc. 2 Quote Link to comment

Thanks for the kind words Tikka. Overall, it seems our community is truly an awesome one. Seems like most Datsun owners just want to help each other keep our beloved cars on the road & are willing to lend a hand, a part, or advice to make that happen. Hearing people reminisce & share their stories with you just never gets old...sometimes inconvenient when your Datsun is a daily driver & you're just trying to some pump gas in the tank to get to work on time, but that aside, our cars just bring smiles to people's faces & that is contagious...and a much needed thing in today's world! racerx
True that...our cars bring back memories of back in the days when things were simpler. 1 Quote Link to comment
Tikka
Simpler...You got that right. I can't even find the spark plugs on my wife's car  1 Quote Link to comment
racerx
Eventhough cars today are more efficient than our datsuns good luck tuning them up or the cost of lets say one of the coil packs go out or fuel injection goes out. Now u need an obd reader for starters to figure out why ur check engine light is on. W our cars you only need a timing light, vacuum gauge to diagnose. Or tune up. And i find these at garage sales all day long really cheap. 1 Quote Link to comment
flatcat19
You need a whole lot more that that to fix new cars. Scan tool doesn't tell you what's wrong with them. It just gives you a simple idea as to where to look for issues. Quote Link to comment
thatdirtykid
While we feel the same way about a large group of "those guys", I have also seen single individuals pour hundreds of hours into their showroom polished muscle cars/trucks and classics. Sometimes its not that easy to differentiate the built crowd from the bought... before you talk to them. I have shared some amazing conversations with guys at that kinds of show. Doesn't tell you shit about whats wrong. Quote Link to comment

Cosmonaut
^^Respect for working on the newest generation of cars....still deep down under all the B.S. the same engineering marvel that has remained true for the last century beats. Instead of us oldies being able to turn a Distributor or carb screw. A nightmare of computerized jumble has to be convinced to turn the ignition or fuel screw to manage the same result. racerx
yep...and they call that efficiency. which actually means cost more for parts and labor cause there are more bells and whistles. Quote Link to comment
