sleeperlee
Hey,gotta 72 510 & planning on maybe finding a donor zx (79-83) to upgrade struts, brakes, transmission. What has to happen to also use the differential in the 510? And could you tell me what the gear ratio would be in a zx ? I think turbo cars were different from non turbos Quote Link to comment
Jesse C.
I think the ratio is 3:90 and why would you want to put an open rear end in your car, you already have one. Plus, it weighs more. Quote Link to comment
sleeperlee
Well I'm not sure if I'll need the 510 diff rebuilt, I know it's leaking, if it's OK I will use it. But if I get a zx donor car ,I'll have the zx diff on hand. The 510 isn't drivable, so I don't know if it's bad. Anyone know if parts are available to rebuild one, or if it can be rebuilt for under say,$400.? Bought the car not running, so don't know if the diff is gonna be noisy or messed up. DISLEXICDIME
You can get a subaru r160 lsd for 400 if you shop around. Has to be 92 or older to work with your axles Quote Link to comment
Draker
You can also get a 3.9 open r160 from a subie for like $50. Quote Link to comment

paradime
Not to mention, the Z's dif is not a direct swap in. It's an r200 with a much deeper offset for the mustache bar. Quote Link to comment
sleeperlee
Is it hard to reseal a 510 diff if that's all it needs? 1 Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Front pinion seal and two side seals unless it's the paper gasket on the back. Are you using synthetic gear oil? Quote Link to comment
Three B's Racing
True if it's an R200, but if the diff is a R180, it's a direct swap if the spline count is the same and it's a bolt in flange axle. 280ZX '79 4-speed R180 3.36 Ratio 25 spline 79 5-speed R180 3.36 ratio 25 spline 79 4-speed R200 3.36 ratio 2+2 29 spline clip in 79 5-speed R200 3.70 ratio 2+2 & GL 29 spline clip in 79 automatic R180 3.54 ratio 2+2 and Coupe 25 spline 80 5-speed R180 3.54 ratio 25 spline 80 5-speed R200 3.90 ratio 2+2 and GL 29 spline clip in 80 Auto R180 3.54 ratio 2+2 and coupe 25 spline 81-83 5-speed R200 3.54 All Turbo 29 spline clip in 81-83 5-speed R200 3.900 ratio All naturally asperated 29 spline clip in 81-83 automatic R180 3.54 ratio all naturally asperated 25 spline 2 Quote Link to comment
