B310 of Maximum Zootness

Recommended Posts

Been working like a dog, this weekend were my first days off in 2 weeks so I haven't accomplished as much as I would have liked. I did get the garage cleaned up and got the old girl out in the sunshine for the first time in a year.

I also started neutering the 510 wagon for all of its good parts. I removed the coilovers and 280zx brakes and replaced them with the 210 stuff so I can keep on dailying it. Drivetrain is next....

Semi productive weekend; I was sick of the wagon bottoming out over every road imperfection, so I got some scion TC bump stops and threw them in. They are super squidgy and were about 4" long (tee hee hee), so I cut them in half and installed the larger diameter sections on the strut shafts. Much success. The ride is super decent now and it no longer bottoms at every opportunity. I don't have much travel before the stops come in, but they are designed that way in the scion, so they are pretty plush. No pics cause it ain't fun to look at and I did it without even taking the wheels off the car.

I also tore the manifolds and gubbins off or the KA24 head. What a greasy bitch. I only broke 1 stud and found another broken, but I got them both removed. No real surprises, I did look like the engine burned a shitload of oil though.

I didnt know that the truck engines had the little butterflys in the intake runners. I yanked that shit out. It was seized anyway.

I've been putting off finishing the body work because I hate it. I managed to do a little last night though. I filled in all of the extra license plate holes and shave the license plate lights because mine were all crusty. I'm going to run those bolts with the little l.e.d.s in them.

Despite having to work every frigging day, I managed to do some work (wife is out of town).

I cleaned up the KA head, but that is boring. I have to have my buddy tig up one of the oil drain holes and then send it to the machine shop.

I want to get this thing in paint fairly soon, so I needed to make the exhaust cutout and straighten out the rear valance. I have always liked how the early Z cars head the vertical dual exhaust tips and decided that I wanted that on the 210. I've had some shitty rotten mufflers that were pulled off of a '68 BSA Thunderbolt that had passed through the laboritory on the shelf for years. I decided that they would be good candidates.

They were long as hell, so I sectioned them 4" and repacked them.

I cobbled up a collector (diffuser?) Out of scrap pipe and a janky exhaust tip and welded it all up.

I don't think it's going to do too much muffling, but I am pleased with the outcome, if not my photography skills. Plus now I have righteous BSA parts on my Datsun.

Thanks man.

I've had the idea in my head for a while.

It's fun having a project that's not also my daily because I can try out all of the goofy shit that bounces around in my noggin and I don't have to worry about it making it to work on Monday. I do need to pull my finger out and get some paint on this thing soon though.

Im using 180lb springs in the rear of my 210, with a set of pretty stiff valved mustang2 pro shocks

I actually picked up an ST suspensions lowering kit for an 89 accord. The springs are the right diameter for my setup, and close in length. The they are progressive. The rates are approximately 230 in the rear and 360 in the front. The 360s might be too stiff, but I'm going to give them a shot.

Did some stuff.

I talked earlier in the thread about "torque boxes" to tie the rockers to the frame rails and give a good jacking point at the front of the car. I decided to knock some out out of some 1/8" L angle.

Looked like this, all naked like;

It still needs one for the other side.

I thought I might like the rear panel to be to be satin black like a Celica I once had. Once I squirted some on and started playing with the bumpers (which are also black), the bumpers looked lost, so I nixed that idea. I made some bumper brackets instead. These things kicked my ass way more than they should have, locating things in 3D space is always a challenge.

Next time I go out, I'm going to make some steel end caps to make my cheapie Yue Loong bumpers look like pimp ass small Sunny bumpers.

Started on the bumper caps. I thought about making forming blocks for them, but I would need to do that 4 times and that ain't no fun. So I went freehand with them.

I made a skeleton to use as kind of a buck out of some steel rod. I welded them to the bumpers, they will be part of the structure.

I started to skin this with some rusty ass 22g I had laying around. I got the top half of the lt side roughed out and tacked on. I had to do this one out of 2 pieces, the curve was a bit much to get out of one piece with the tools I have. I should be able to do the bottom out of a single piece. Keep in mind these are still rough and will be cleaned up once they are all done. I would have waited to post pics until they were pretty, but I am stoked about how they are coming out.

Thanks.

I finished the drivers side. Pretty happy with it. I could put in a little more work and metal finish them real nice like, but they are getting paint and not chrome. Myself and I had a little conversation and we decided that I need to know when to say good enough and move on, otherwise this thing will never get done. The bumpers will get a skim of filler and will be fine.

Anywhoo...

Yea man 200's are pretty stiff in the front i would suggest if your going to use those springs a good set of shocks would be in order to control them

I've been running 250lb up front in the A10 (pulled them for this car)with adjustable KYBs. The dampening seems adequate. I have a little less bump travel than I like, but I have some ideas about that. I'm sure I'll be dicking around with the suspension for a bit before I land on a setup that I'm happy with.

Roughed out the other bumper cap and welded up the extrenuous holes. I need to revisit the bumper brackets, give them some more beef and move the bumper up a bit.

Here is a shit ass pic in a dark old carriage house. The pic makes it look a little funny how it sits up in the body line, but that's not the case in real life. Much gooder than the US diving boards says I.

With the future power plant plans, heat management is going to be important. I wanted to do some kind of extractor vent in the hood. I considered the GT500 one, but it seemed too plastic, Evo style seemed too modern. I decided on some old school louvers. I put them behind the radiator in what should be a low pressure zone. Here's a good article if you want to read about such things; http://www.autospeed.com/cms/article.html?&A=113176

As usual, I took the path of most resistance and ordered 4 7x11" panels of 5" louvers. I then had to weld these together without warping the shit out of them.

No turning back now.

It was about this time that my wife wandered out and said that they look "super gay" and needed to be moved further back on the hood, I tried explaining things about facts and science and how her opinion matters not, but she was not convinced.

Got them tacked in and called it a night. I want to be fresh when I finish weld them, that's a lot of thin steel not to warp.
