Hondanx250
Hey Guys, I am planning on swapping the engine to a L18 in my wagon. But I have a question about the flywheel. The L18 i picked up came out of a Manual. I was looking at it and the flywheel has 5 bolts and i believe my z20s Flex plate uses 6 bolts to bolt on to the crankshaft. Also need it to bolt on the torq convertor. Do i need to find a aftermarket flex plate? or go a whole different route and turn the car into a Manual?I am planing on pulling the engine this weekend. Thanks Ryan Quote Link to comment

dr.feltersnatch
I think the way I read that was you were trying to bolt a torque converter to a flywheel mot a flex plate. So you will need to find a 5 bolt flex plate and ask mike if the torque converter bolt pattern is the same. Quote Link to comment
flatcat19
A little off topic- Can I buy your conrods off of you from your Z20? Quote Link to comment

datzenmike
The '79 HL510 should be an L20B engine but whatever. All L20B/Z20/Z22/Z24 are 6 bolt cranks. You will need a 5 bolt flex plate from any L18 or L16 after April '71. I'm fairly confident the torque converters are the same up until mid '82. Chances are if you find a 5 bolt flex plate the converter won't be far away anyway so maybe snag it also so you have the set.. DO NOT forget the two small round 5 bolt spacers that sandwich the flex plate. The front one that mounts against the crank positions the center of the torque converter. The 4 mounting bolts do not! You have to have these spacers. They will look like the top two but with 5 holes. See the right one? That round hole in the center aligns the torque converter. Quote Link to comment

Tristin
I think I have everything you need for the 5bolt system. Good luck getting me to ship though  3 Quote Link to comment

Tristin
But seriously, I think I have everything. All my garage stuff is still in boxes from my move, but I can try to look for everything. I had like 3 sets of everything at one time during my auto swap. Quote Link to comment
bananahamuck
You got yours ALL worked out?? Don't wanna get rid of anything you might need later ,you know. I think the flex plate and flywheel bolts are different lengths so you might snag those too... I compared them once but i forgot what the results were. But seriously, I think I have everything. flatcat19
Auto to auto swap? Quote Link to comment
bananahamuck
1600 to L20b using OG trans,, the flexplates and spacers i gave him were different in many ways ,, not just the amount of holes. I'm sure it was quite the skull scratcher,, but it is driving around so i assume something was figured out. datzenmike
Flywheel bolts are longer. Quote Link to comment
Tristin
Bolts are longer, spacers are different thicknesses, different hole pattern, flexplates are different shapes, different hole pattern... My auto to auto swap is for sure running, but I have some bugs to work out on the starting it part. Do do the manual to auto swap you will need 5bolt bolts, thin 5bolt spacer, thick 5bolt spacer, 5bolt flexplate from later JATCO transmission. If you run the earlier flexplate there may be some alignment issues with the starter (which I have and could be my culprit). You may also have issues bolting your torque converter from your current transmission to your new 5bolt flexplate. They will both be 4 bolts, but may be a different hole pattern spacing. If thats the case you will have to drill new holes in the 5bolt flexplate to mount the converter. Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
You will need a 5 bolt flex plate from any L18 or L16 after April '71. This is the earliest L series Jatco 3N71B transmission used on the 510. Previous ones were one of three species of BorgBarner 35s. Quote Link to comment
