DatSun620PU
Hey guys, been looking and I can find stuff on EI dizzys but not how much they cost, What should I expect for an average cost? have an l18. also what should i expect to pay for a valve adjustment? don't have the tools and currently id feel more comfortable having a mechanic do it. thanks Quote Link to comment

DatSun620PU
I'm looking at getting a new one but thanks for the info! Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
For the cost of a mechanic doing the adjustment you could easily buy the tools and a proper Nissan factory service manual and learn to do yourself. It's not rocket science and there is an excellent tutorial in the How To section of Ratsun. Buy tools as needed and become self sufficient. Quote Link to comment
dr.feltersnatch
Valve adjustment is very easy. You can do this. You will need a 10mm socket to remove the valve cover and a 14 amd 17mm end wrench. You should already have these if not you can find a set for cheap. You will also need a set of feeler gages. They are cheap also. Way cheaper than paying a mechanic. Quote Link to comment

Quote Link to comment
dr.feltersnatch
It will if you have the proper pedestal. And its designed for a 1980 not a 74 Quote Link to comment
DatSun620PU
So I have to custom make on or what? What if I do a Pertronix system and just replace the points and condenser? Quote Link to comment
izzo
Valves be easy and shit.. Doesn't take too long. PS, when you do the valves. make sure the motor is at operating temperature. Make sure the motor is on TDC... you do four valves at a time, spin it to #4 position, and do the other four. Clean the valve cover well where the gasket is, and also the area on the head where the valve cover gasket goes... And use a new rubber valve cover gasket... It'll keep your shit from leaking. Cork ones don't tend to hold up well once used and pulled apart. You don't need any rtv or sealant. Get the valve cover bolts finger tight, all of them... Then use a socket wrench and do a half turn on each one. that should be tight enough... take it for a spin, then make sure they are still tight. Don't over tighten them... edit... No, you don't have to make one. You just have to make sure you have the right pedalstool. you can get one off another motor with EI dizzy! Or put up a wanted ad :) Quote Link to comment

It has been fouling from too much gas so I believe it's carb and a new dizzy will fix the problem. Quote Link to comment
DatSun620PU
Okay, so I believe I'm going to buy a new distributor, cap, wires etc but buy the Pertronix system instead of having to go through the hassle of the mounting plate and everything. Quote Link to comment
ggzilla
Yes, good idea. Your exising coil works with the Pertronix too. As long as you have the single-point distributor, it will work. Quote Link to comment
DatSun620PU
So, it is a one point. Does anyone know the part number for the system? We need to put all this stuff in one place. It is a pain on the ass to look for everything. You have to open about 10 pages to get the information. Quote Link to comment
izzo
if you goto the yard and pull a matchbox dizzy. Grab the pedalstool and the coil same time, take everything... Wiring it in is easy and we can help once we know what you got to work with. Wiring these things are easy enough my 7 year old knows how to :) To much gas... Make sure your floats are working properly. it could be pushing gas past and flooding the carb, make sure the air/fuel is set right. If you go from points to electronic dizzy buy NGK plugs the same heat range as stock but gapped at .44..... It's always a good to at least check/adjust the valves when you get a car. Tho it may seem right, and may be, you never know.... Who knows when the last time someone did them was. From my experience... never it seems.. At least when buying a datsun from a yard/ditch or non datsun enthusiast. only time valves seem to be adjusted is when I get it from a fellow datsunhead... Quote Link to comment
dr.feltersnatch
A new dizzy wont solve the flooding issue. An electronic dizzy set up is nice but you will have to deal with the carb issue separate. I agree first thing is check the float level. 1 Quote Link to comment
DatSun620PU
So, it's the hitachi carb with 175,xxx miles on it. It's shit. Should I get a new carb or the dizzy set up first? Quote Link to comment
ggzilla
Hitachi carbs dont flood because they are old. They flood for the same reasons newer Weber's flood. While you are waiting on the Pertonix, adjust the float and clean the needle & seat. Quote Link to comment
banzai510(hainz)
how about take soem photos of your set up and post them. Inside the dizzy points, the coil set up, ect and we can give a good look. Portland should have a few ratsuners that could help out, Quote Link to comment
dr.feltersnatch
i would get the carb situated first. if that means fixing the one you have great. if that means upgrading to a weber even better. no sense in having a shiny new dizzy with a busted carb. do you have a repair manual? if not pm me your email and i will send you a pdf of one. DatSun620PU
Yes, I have a chilton. Ive been having some problems trying to post pictures from my cell phone that's why there are none Quote Link to comment
DatSun620PU
So 32/36 or 38/38 weber? I hear the 38 has problems with turning off and I'm not looking to monster carb my l18. I just want to upgrade the carb so I can 1. Fix the fuel fouling problem 2. Get rid of shitty stock carb 3. Get more performance Quote Link to comment
