Need help with my son's 1969 521

Hi Guys,

My son just saved a 521 from the junk yard in Colorado and now is sitting in his house instead of in pile of scrap.  The truck seems to be in good shape overall except for the engine.  We knew this before we bought it so now it's time to deal with it.  Our plan is to get a running L16, 18, or 20 and replace the original one.  After doing that we want to see if we can rebuild the current engine to have a spare since we have a 510 in the family.

 

So we are looking for help with 2 things,

 

1.- Does someone have a running L16, 18, 20 available?  We live in Northern Colorado.

2.- After we do the swap we will start working on rebuilding the current engine, where is the best place to get the rebuild kit for this engine?

I can't believe this gem was at the wreckers!!!

 

 

Most auto parts stores (such as NAPA, Rock Auto, etc.) will have rings bearings, gaskets and seals for the L16. You may have to buy the rings and the bearings separate.

 

An L20B will also need a flywheel as they are 6 bolt and the L16/18 are 5. The 6 bolt flywheel comes drilled for 200mm, 225mm and 240mm size pressure plates and clutches. Doesn't really matter which size you get but the release bearing collar has to match which ever one you find. If by chance you manage to find a 200mm flywheel the collar on your L16 will fit it..

You may also want to check and make sure it's an L-series in there. If I remember correctly, the 69 was the transition year from J to L; it could be either in there.

 

That truck looks way nice... Especially for the wrecker. Glad you saved it.

 

Edit: you did say you had a 510 so I'm going to bet you know what the engines look like. Just want to double check before you buy wrong parts.

The engine is stuck, I even tried turning the pulley's bolt with a socket and a big wrench and it will not move, so I am planning on taking the transmission down first and then try it again.

Not an L16. Look just behind the dip stick at the top edge of the block just below the head. The engine size will be stamped there. Use a wire brush if you have to. It's an L20B motor.

I finally got a chance to work on the 521, here are some pics of the engine

and I need help figuring out the size of the engine, here is a picture of the side next to the oil stick, I don't see any other numbers on the block.  Is it a L20?

And finally as soon as I released piston #4 I was able to turn the pulley, so I am assuming piston #4  is stuck for some reason.  Any ideas?

Look on the block in the location of the red rectangle.  Engine Model is the block closet to the firewall the other block is the serial number and if it is the original motor both numbers will match the VIN tag on the firewall.

a leveler will help alot getting that engine back in and th trans needs to get lifted as its a bitch to get motor back in as the oil pan hits the steering bar.

if trans lifyed to max and maybe remove the water pumps everthing clears.

 

I also put the engine mpunts on the fram then slide the motor in to the mounts. I see you pulled the mounts off from the fram then up.

Ok I found the numbers, it is a L18. So now I will start the search for the internal parts at rockauto and other places.

While I do the work on the engine I will check if I can fit another engine on the 521 bay, I have access to a 1600 roadster engine, an A14 with a 5 speed tranny, or a Z20 1981 510 wagon with a four speed tranny, I will take measurements to see which engine will be less work to install.

The reason is that I have never done a rebuild before so I am thinking it will take me a lot of time to do the research and get it done. The good thing is that there is tons of info here so I am confident I can do it, we'll see.
