Jason Wright
original motor had a bad rod bearing at number 3. cyl walls werent to good either. took it to a local machine shop where they turned the crank and rods 20/20 and bored it .40 over. The head was also cracked between the valve of #3 combustion chamber. Found a reman head and port matched it. Also ported the intake. it also has a Comp High Energy 260 Cam, pacesetter headers and a weber 32/36 carb. Still a lot to do, but a lot of fun to drive. Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
The Z24 made great torque. Best bang for the buck performance is changing to a 4.11 or even a 4.375 differential and is easliy reversed later if you want. Nissan tended to go 3.545 or 3.70 to get mileage numbers. A lower ratio will improve acceleration at the expense of mileage. Quote Link to comment
Jason Wright
The torque is amazing! She will lay rubber in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd gear. Not sure what size gear is in it but at 70 Mph she turning 3k rpm. Quote Link to comment
Jason Wright
If I drive It normally, I get about 20 mpg. Quote Link to comment
Jason Wright
Do the offer a posi diff for it? That she likes to light up the right rear tire. Lol. Quote Link to comment
_chiefjt
Nice build so far. One thing though is why not clean the engine bay while you had the motor out. Would've looked A LOT cleaner imo. But I don't think they make a posi for it. Your best bet is the 4.11 diff like Mike said. I bought one but haven't installed it yet. I got it from a '71 Datsun 521 and not only is it better gearing, the housing for it is Aluminum. 1 Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
The 521s only had 4.375 rear gears.... unless it was changed before you got it. Look on the outer rim of the ring gear for the numbers stamped there. It should have 39:9 if 4.11 and 35:8 if 4.375 Jason would you like this all moved to the Project forum? Likely you will be adding to it. 1 Quote Link to comment
_chiefjt
Oh okay, this whole time I thought I had a 4.11. lol So I have a 4.375 diff with an aluminum housing from a '71 Datsun 521. Either way you should try and get one if your looking for torque. I haven't switched mine yet cause it's for race purposes only. Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Check the numbers stamped on it and divide the small one into the large. 8 pinion teeth into 35 ring gear teeth is 4.375. The early 720 2 and 4wd were 4.375 and later Z22 powered 4x4s were 4.375. There was an H-190 LSD option for the '88-'93 D21 Hardbody but it had 3.889 ratio gears. You could easily change them out for 4.375s. Remember it was an option so there won't be many out there AND it was only available on the 4 cylinder 2wd trucks. wayno on here found one once. wayno
I don't agree with you Mike, the 521s with the J13 came with 488s. datzenmike
Right. How about "The PL521s only came with 4.375s"?  Quote Link to comment
_chiefjt
It's a 35:8. I guess I got them switched up. I spent a long time looking for a 4.375 and now I want that lsd your talking about. But I don't wanna ruin his thread so what's the update on your KC? Quote Link to comment
izzo
Looks nice. Curious why all that work on the motor, but you didn't finish cleaning up the timing cover? Quote Link to comment
