I haven't swapped a Z series motor for an L but I imagine there are 2 critical differences.

The internally regulated alternator which will require bypassing the 620 regulator. There are a few threads on this.

The ignition system which I am no help with.

if you keep the engine an actual Z engine (leave it with the Z head) youll deal with the engine angle difference.

Z engines sit a few degrees over to the driver side as opposed to the L that does the 12* to the passenger side.

you would use the engine mounts from the 720 z engine to bolt to the 620 rubbers on the frame.

the bell housing pattern is the same for the L and the Z.

if you lean the L series trans over to the driver side, it will bolt up. the shifter will lean towards you now. just weld up another one with a bend. its what i did in my 620 with the KA swap.

another solution is using a trans from a 720 that had the Z engine in it. i dont know if you need a 31.5in long, or the 26.5 in long unit, but a 720 is what would have it.

nooow, if you build an LZ and use an L head, then its just like swapping in any other L series. just bolt that stuff in..

A LZ2.2 is just taking the bottom half of the Z22 and bolting on a L series cylinder head. A U67 is the preferred head.

Check out the Ozdat engine calculator for some different ideas. I meant to include this link in my post above. Oh well. I ran a Z22s bottom end with a U67 head through and came up with 9.762 static compression. You would likely be around 9.5 with unshrouding the valves and cleaning up around the fire ring.

Just for the record, you will continue to use the L series trans if you bolt the L series head on the Z series block.

alrighty guys, so Im back at it.  I have since put the truck on 33s and today I pulled the motor and tranny.  In addition to this I got the 5 speed in and Im hoping on Saturday to get the z22 in.  Im pumped on the progress and I can not wait to get the z22 5 speed combo going.  Once this happens I am going to be able to hook up the power steering and switch transfer cases.  I am going to put a regeared Samurai transfer case in as to ge a better crawler gear and a higher highway gear.  more to come

Im interested as to how im going to integrate the sammi T-case as well.

So I got home from work and thought the most relaxing thing to do would be to put an engine in my Datsun.  Its only off the road 3 days and Im itchin to have it back.  Anyways I switched the motor mounts from the L18 to make it fit and I did an out of the car oil change, a lot easier than in the car.  After this it was time to test fit.  It was all lining up until it got to my high steer setup for the solid axle.  damn it.....  I'm going to pop off the idler arm tomorrow and fit the engine, once this is in it may clear the steering.  Hopefully this does it, or I may be trimming and welding the oil pan or some other sort of madness.  we will see...

These pictures kind of suck and it was getting dark, so you can try to see where the oil pan hits the steering

On the Sammi Tcase, I definately will hit you up when I have some questions.  thank you.

OK, so yesterday I messed around with it for a few hours, the steering clears fine, the issue I am having now is getting the thing hooked to the transmission and getting the motor mounts to line up.  I tried a few different ways and I think what I came up with was taking the motor mounts off of the frame and engine, getting the engine bolted to the tranny, and then hooking the motor mounts to the body then the engine.  Does this sound right?  I going to go spend some time on it here in a few but advise may be helpful if i dont get anywhere with this.

Alright,  I did some work on this last week ang got  pics for yall.

The first pic is to show you that I made sure to make this as much of a pain in the ass as possible.  I did this by doing it in dirt on a hill.  But I made it work

Here she sits with a couple straps keeping the engine straight.

Since then I did get the motor mounted and not much else.  I want to get this done so I can get back to smashin around in my datsun again.

Not a very good picture but heres one without the hoist.  Almost there; athough, the bottom starter bolt is having a hell of a time lining up with the dust plate, looks like im going to have to bust out the punches and see if i can bend that shit straight.

Alrighty,

So I have been lagging some on this project because of life....  anyways, I have done countless little things since my last post, but the main things as seen in these picture was taking off the old carb and putting the Weber on.  In addition to this I have put in an aluminum radiator with an electric fan.  these pics were weeks ago and since then I have gotten the cooling system solid.  Also I have bought and installed a pacesetter header and I am close to finishing the exhaust system. This involved some welding of the egr and o2 sensor holes in the header I didnt get pictures of.  Anyways, here are a couple pics and I will try to get some more up tonight.  I am getting to a point where I need to figure out this dual coil conversion for plugs.  Not sure how complicated this will be, anyone.........

Alright, here are some better pictures for you that are a little more current.

So first I have these 4runner seats that will be soooo much more comfortable than my bench seat(which is up for grabs if anyone is interested).  These are not bolted in but they are lined up and wont be too hard.

Here is the pacesetter header installed

here is a pic that you can kind of see the 2 spots on the header where it  was welded to eliminate the o2 sensor and the egr.

IMG_0060.jpg

Now we have the electric fan that I hooked up to my new aluminum radiator for maximum coolage

IMG_0059.jpg

And this is where she sits for now.  i just need to put on the new plug wires and try to run her for now with the one coil.  Hopefully in the near future I will hook up both but for the sake of getting her moving I would like to get iit running with what I got.  By the way does anyone know if the blue wire or red wire from the napz 2.2 is the coil to the intake plugs?'

this truck is super close and I can not wait to get to careening around in this thing again

With the parts truck laying around, a wiring diagram should be all you need. I got pretty familiar with that wiring harness recently, I'm prepping an 82 720 harness to go in my 510 wagon, along with the z22 and the 5 speed. Pm me if you can't find a wiring diagram or find one but have some questions about it.

Thanks guys,

Ok so I wired the coils up as they are in the wiring diagram.  Also I have everything else hooked up with new wires and plugs.  I tried cranking it over and it just turns and turns with none of the cylinders firing.  I am going to check the spark plugs tomorrow to see if they are sparking at all to try and narrow this down.  Also I primed it to see if it was gas and it didnt help at all.  SOo we will see about the spark tomorrow.  I will also try and update pics.

In addition to this, I just realized that I have the 620 external voltage regulator hooked up and the distributor has an internal regulator.  How do I eliminate the external regulator for my truck, what is involved in that?  Also I was wondering if this could keep my truck from sparking? I dont think so but wanted to see if anyone knew for sure.

Maybe when I get some pics up someone will see something that is painfully obvious I am missing.
