Exhaust Manifold - Headpipe Seal ???

Hello, All,

Very informative group. Thanks to all. I'm starting to go back together with the '78 'Longbed' after doing a valve job with new valves. I have a question regarding the exhaust leadout(headpipe) seal to the exhaust manifold. I'm sure that you all know that I have the three bolt clamping flange that pulls the headpipe up into the manifold. My question is: is there supposed to be a gasket ring, sleeve, or wrap that seals the pipe flare to the manifold or is it just metal to metal.

I had holy-rolling hell getting the headpipe out of the manifold on the teardown and there appeared to be no fibre or otherwise seal between the exhaust components. Thanks in advance.

The '75 and up has a rounded bead on the end of the down pipe and about a 1/4" of the end sticks up into the exhaust manifold. There is a ring collar that has three bolts that draws the bead up tightly against the manifold. No gasket required.
