motor questions

I was doing a tune up on my truck today and noticed something i havent really seen before. my valve cover has a big Z on it, so i was wondering does that mean i have a Z motor in my datsun?

im going to assume your talking about your 720, and if thats the case you dont have a Z car motor you have a NapsZ motor

Z-car engines are 6 cylinders.  Nissan-Z just means you have a Z-series (aka NAPS-Z) engine.  Most likely a Z22, as that was the stock engine for 1981.

 

And no, just because you have 8 spark plug wires doesn't mean it has 8 cylinders.  (Yes, someone asked that before).  The dual spark plugs plus the design of the cylinder head and the no-pump Air Injection system was all part of the NAPS (Nissan Anti Pollution System), which was to achieve the mandated EPA (and Japanese) Emissions Standards of the time, and as a replacement for the somewhat more HP-robbing smog-pump system used in earlier engines.

You can swap the cast Z20/22 valve cover for the stamped steel Z24 one. You need to use the longer Z22 cover bolts.

Yeah, they are interchangeable but the only downside is, is that the z22 valve cover doesn't have the plug wire holders. I've been looking for a long time. Finally found one and the next day it was gone. Pretty pissed.

I have another valve cover but the steel for the valve is rusted out.... I have 3 Z22's so there has got to be another valve cover... but I dunno..
