bloobe
I am getting a grinding sound when I trying start my 510. It's like when your car is already started and you try and start it. The engine doesn't engage or anything. Just a lovely grinding noise. Suggestions appreciated :) Quote Link to comment
BJW's FiveTen's
Your starter come loose? If not Try putting it in 3rd gear and rolling it a foot or two forward to turn.the engine some. Then try starting it again. Could have a section of your ring gear missing some teeth. If after rolling it in gear to a good spot on the flywheel ring gear it starts well then your looking at putting a flywheels in it. Quote Link to comment
bloobe
Oh boy, the little guy is hanging on by a thread. Thanks Bryce! Quote Link to comment
BJW's FiveTen's
No problem my friend. Happy to help keep another Datsun rolling. Quote Link to comment
bloobe
Well now I see why things came loose. Both engine threads were stripped. Quote Link to comment
BJW's FiveTen's
Once loose they just beat up the threads. Quote Link to comment
bloobe
Sorry to keep bugging you--I'm not sure how to proceed in this situation. Am I looking at re-threading the holes, or should I consider something like loctite, or is there another option? I am still learning :) Quote Link to comment
kelowg
helicoils inserts and locktite. autozone carriers different size kits, just take your time tapping new larger threads. install insert with locktite when NEW starter bolts. Quote Link to comment
bloobe
Oh man, thanks Kelowg. You are a lifesaver. Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
The starter threads into the aluminum transmission. Quote Link to comment
BJW's FiveTen's
If you need a hand let me know. I could come by after work tomorrow. Any one know off hand what size I have heilicoil kits at work. Thanks bryce 206-915-9311 Quote Link to comment
bloobe
Bryce, that'd be amazing! I picked up new bolts that are the same fitting, 10M-1.25 The length seems different between the two maybe 25mm & 35mm, but I don't know if that makes a difference. Quote Link to comment
bloobe
Mmmm, you are correct. I had said engine. Thanks. Quote Link to comment
wayno
Try longer bolts. :) Quote Link to comment
BJW's FiveTen's
Someone had used a 3/8 bolt for one of the holes and the other was gone. I put in one insert and cleaned up the threads in the other hole and used a new longer bolt. Should get him down the road for a while. Quote Link to comment
bloobe
Thanks Bryce for your help and for stopping by. Quote Link to comment
banzai510(hainz)
L16s the hole is straight thru and you could use a nut. could just drill it out if in a pinch 5 speeds or later Datsun had threaded holes on the trans and the right size bolts. You got it fixed now so dont matter Quote Link to comment
