CameronT
I've seen stock tachs for and in 620's but can't figure out the redline. From what I've seen it's yellow where the shift light would be at 6500 and red at 7000. If it helps the year is 77 and its a l20b rebuilt Quote Link to comment
bonvo
i wouldnt rev it past 6500 though it really doesnt matter the power band will taper off long before you hit that if your running a mostly stock engine Quote Link to comment
moparvwfreak
i have hit 7K before in my beat L20. especially when i am mad. she still runs just fine. plus i have heard 7k is redline on these motors. so thats where i set my redline marker on my aftermarket tachs. Quote Link to comment

]2eDeYe
7000 RPM Redline. L motors are balanced really well from the factory. Quote Link to comment
CameronT
So I can hit 7k for racing around against Ricers but not everyday?? Quote Link to comment
ggzilla
You can hit 7k RPM any time, it is safe to do so. The red (danger) portion is above 7k But you'll accelerate faster if you shift at 5500 RPM with a stock L20B. Quote Link to comment
CameronT
It has a few things but basically stock but third is really long I noticed Quote Link to comment
DanielC
There is nothing magical about 7,000 RPM. The higher you rev the engine the more you stress it. For what it is worth, the most critical point is when the piston is being slowed down, near the end of the exhaust stroke, and is then pulled back down in the cylinder, starting the intake stroke. both valves are slightly open as the piston goes through TDC, at this point, also. There is a very real possibility you are beyond the most optimum point to shift into the next gear, if you are taking the engine up to 7K, even with the large gap between second and third. This is why a five speed is a good swap, the closer gears through out the range. the overdrive fifth is a bonus, but the closer other gears is the bigger gain. Quote Link to comment
