Any tips for trimming SSS choke cable without destroying it?

Try this. First twist the frayed (?) ends together. Clean the inner cable end with spray brake cleaner, let dry and dip in flux. Heat up your soldering iron and lightly tin the end. It will go into the socket without further fraying. Extra length of outer cover? Loop it.

Clean it, and solder it like above, where you want to cut it. Then use an abrasive cut-off disk.

I recommend liquid flux and a finer core solder.
