Eagle_Adam
i used to use those, then i wrenched with a nissan master tech that swore by em so i bought a box and havnt looked back. I dont even care about the cost B/C the only time i take em off is to smoke a cig. I can answer and use my phone with them on and sharp shit is about the only thing that tears em Quote Link to comment
aintnobiscuit
Well, I'm sold, I'll try to find a box and test them out Quote Link to comment
INDY510
where do you buy JDM CA18DE(T) parts and new gaskets??? ... . I want to take my intake manifold apart, and remove any unnecessary parts/valve/wires/hoses ... Do you have a link for what can be removed on CA18's??? .. . or a CA18DET specific website? Laecaon
Indy, I was so close to asking this question myself. I have a CA18DET waiting to be gone through in my garage, but I would really like to find new gaskets first. I thought I had read though, that you cant get full kits... But anyways Indy, rockauto does have some Euro CA18 stuff, and I guess you know of the differences. Quote Link to comment
aintnobiscuit
Last night Removed oil pressure switch Removed turbo oil feed line Removed oil filter plate Removed oil cooler line and coolant host Removed heater line/adapter Pulled clutch / pressure plate Pulled engine out by hand, no crane. Don't ever do this. It was terrible and i made a huge mess (pissed oil everywhere) and hurt my back a little bit. It's just stiff, i didn't like really hurt my back or anything. This is where that whole "patience" thing comes in. It's important and theres a reason why they make engine cranes. On the plus side when I start making stupid decisions, I know when to say enough is enough. I said F' it after that and went to bed. This morning: I was able to easily get the lifters out Here's the tool I made to compress my springs since they don't make one that fits this head/valve configuration And here you can see the keepers Intake valves/keepers/retainers removed (the seals are still in there) Intake valves/keepers/retainers All done with the head! I picked up a piston ring compressor and gear puller so I can remove the pulley from the crank shaft when i get home and disassemble the bottom end... should go more smoothly since I'm not tired from driving 8 hours today, just working, LOL! aintnobiscuit
INDY510 / Laecaon Ask and you shall receive: This site has info on what can be removed, I linked directly to the coolant mod since it's the first one you'll likely want to do http://driftopia.com/blog/2007/11/14/ca18det-coolant-mod-number-2-from-10-lines-to-1/ This is where I buy gaskets, etc because they are up the street from my office and stock damn near everything for CA18DET. They ship same day on anything in stock and Mike Le is the sales guy I usually talk to. He's insanely knowledgeable about CA and other nissan motors. I like FRSport because they specialize in nissan stuff. You can order stock gaskets / gasket sets straight from nissan too. http://www.frsport.com/index.php?target=products&mode=searchImproved&q=ca18det&x=0&y=0 If you need parts and know the part #, you can use this. Cheapest nissan parts available. And they ship anywhere :D http://courtesyparts.com/ Most parts/gaskets are available for the 88 pulsar in the US. Here's a part # thread http://forums.nicoclub.com/part-numbers-crossover-parts-between-usdm-and-jdm-ca18-s-t114952.html The FSM is really helpful too: http://forums.nicoclub.com/link-to-the-fsm-and-wiring-info-t114956.html Anymore questions, just let me know. 4 Quote Link to comment
aintnobiscuit
Annnnnnddddd a little more progress. I'm going to be dropping the block and head off tomorrow for sure! Finally!!!! Wooooohooooo!!!!! Removed the water pump Wait a minute.... that's not stock.... how did I miss that? HOLY SHIT! Lightened flywheel? SCORE FROM PO (of engine)!!!!! Here's the front of a stock flywheel Back of a stock flywheel Girdle No more bolts Pulled all the pistons out. Pretty sure those pock marks are from detonation. Doesn't surprise me since previous owner had a blitz ecu (which leans out the AFRs) and an S-AFC... which is poopoo for big mods. Scuffed bearings Here's all the pistons in a pile Pulled main caps, etc. Close up of crank Quote Link to comment
aintnobiscuit
Well, I dropped my block, crank and head off. I forgot the bolts for the caps though, so I can only do the head today.... gonna have to drive in traffic for an hour tomorrow to drop off the bolts... dammit! But either way, progress is progress... i'm happy to be part way there. I'm just really anxious to get this done.... dammit.. poop... boredom... I guess i'll clean the engine bay and paint some things BTW, only flywheel I can find that looks like the flywheel i have (except different color) is this TODA flywheel. All the other ones look slightly different... anybody have input as far as who might manufacture this aside from TODA? http://www.frsport.c...ET_p_20817.html Quote Link to comment

Or can you re-use them? I was thinking the same exact thing about your flywheel. The TODA ones for my Acura look exactly like that one design wise. The SPEC flywheels look alike too.... aintnobiscuit
Yeah, using new main cap bolts. Everything from ARP. I wasn't going to order any until I get measurements from the shop so I can pick up the following: - Tomei head gasket - Bearings - ARP main cap bolts - some AMS oil - Assembly lube - Valve spring seat... i'm missing one from when i moved :/ at least they're only like $2 - Timing belt So i'm reeeeaaaallllllllly close now. I thought maybe it was a knock off since TODA says theirs is SS. I found a chromoly one too... no aluminum.. and this one is definitely NOT 15lbs... its reallllly light.. like 10lbs. 1 Quote Link to comment
aintnobiscuit
This pdf is fucking amazing btw. It's a pdf of pictures, causes and fixing problems based on piston damage: http://www.boosttown.com/engine/piston_damage.pdf Here's where I dropped off my shit: More pics of a clean engine bay coming soon (i hope) Quote Link to comment
aintnobiscuit
I realize that it's not 100% perfect, but i just needed to do something for a while. Girlfriend is not happy with me, so i spent some time doing stuff that makes me happy in the garage Quote Link to comment
Eagle_Adam
gotta love a clean engine bay!!! Quote Link to comment
aintnobiscuit
Ha ha, yeah, it's as clean as I could get it anyway. I'm going to try and tuck the wiring after I assemble to motor. I feel like I can put the bulk of the wires inside the dash. I just purchased the ARP main stud kit for the ca18det (ARP# 165-5402). It's listed as Saturn 1.9L but the parts are the same as the ones you have to order individually for the CA18DET. A few guys have installed them with perfect fitment over at nicoclub and zilvia. I was going to order a Tomei head gasket, but the only head gasket I can find that is in 835mm is a Cometic... so I just bought that too. In order of importance, the things I still need to purchase to finish the motor: - Cometic head gasket - ARP main cap bolts - Bearings (thinking about clevite 77.... just need to find someone who stocks/sells the right part) - Assembly lube (http://www.frsport.com/Grease---Assembly-Lube_c_385.html) - some AMS oil (any recommendations on places to purchase from?) - Valve spring seat... i'm missing one from when i moved :/ at least they're only like $2 - Timing belt (http://www.frsport.c...CFQuCQgodulIA5A) What are you other swapped guys doing with their wiring? Where do you tuck it to make the bay stay clean/nice/minimal looking? Quote Link to comment

I feel like I can put the bulk of the wires inside the dash. What are you other swapped guys doing? I actually had my whole Dime rewired head to toe with Mil-spec Wiring and Sleeving. Even had a Bulkhead Connector put on the Firewall so I did not have to squeeze all the connectors thru one small hole. This is how it looked under my dash... Sure you can fit more wire under there?? Quote Link to comment
aintnobiscuit
Damn! LOL... That looks great. Do you have a pic of your dash? I'm curious about the gauge setup now that I've seen all your gauges. Trying to find a good way to mount them... i don't really want the a-pillar gauge pods but I also want to retain the stock dash... unless I go all out, in which case I was going to black out the plastic and put light up gauges behind it (such as defi or apexi) Quote Link to comment
SR20DETdatsun510
I don't have the gauges all set up and mounted yet. They are just strapped together like you see and down on my center console. I have 13 gauges total. 9 of them I have to still deal with... I have been thinking about having my dash pad modified since it now has a crack right down the center. I don't have any Heater stuff so I was going to delete the heater controls, cut the dash frame where the heater controls are and have my dash pad made to look like this. That will take care of 3... Quote Link to comment
aintnobiscuit
oh, that actually looks pretty nice. If I can find a place to put my gauges that isn't as noticeable (but still viewable from driver's seat) then I am going to do that. The A-pillar pods are just asking for trouble (from cops, thieves, etc) Quote Link to comment

SR20DETdatsun510
now just get rid of that bastard mount on the drivers fender well....... Ya, I was wondering what that was for. I thought it was purposeful cause your bay looks redone (eliminated the Battery tray indent) Quote Link to comment
aintnobiscuit
Erich: Yeah, the PO made it so he could bolt the air filter bracket to it... As soon as I can find a yellow that looks really similar I'm going to finish my fenders, remove that POS bracket and paint it... plus stripes on the fenders again ^.^ SR20DETdatsun510: gonna check out their stuff! thanks Quote Link to comment
aintnobiscuit
I'm going to find some yellow paint that matches the engine bay/body and re-spray the bay to get rid of those scuff marks and make the yellow actually coat the whole bay. There are plenty of spaces (such as the tops of the wheel well) where its not painted at all. Going to fix this over the weekend and use a pressure washer to clean the garage.... i'm so bummed... its ridiculously filthy since i spilled the oil :( Quote Link to comment
