SR20DETdatsun510
Belt sander and vicegrips... now you are talking my language. But the Drill in the vice and nice raspy file is a little better idea!! Hahaha Quote Link to comment
Eagle_Adam
drill press by chance? Quote Link to comment
aintnobiscuit
I wish :( I'm not a fan of having to keep re-buying tools especially machinery, but this could serve my purpose and considering cost... as long as it lasts through the whole process i'll be happy... http://www.harborfreight.com/5-speed-drill-press-38119.html Quote Link to comment
Eagle_Adam
me too, im just reaching or ideas cus im board outta my skull at work on a call that is pointless :D Quote Link to comment
Eagle_Adam
was looking for a specialty socket online and read you can heave the head clearanced for the ARP studs :/ Quote Link to comment
rusty12ver
Sears had craftsman sockets that tapered down at the end, maybe they still sell them? Or maybe thin walled sockets? Sucks being held up by a single socket. Quote Link to comment
aintnobiscuit
Good solution... I'm going to swing by several different stores and pick up the socket if I can find one that is thinner... it's atleast a good starting point :) It's not a normal socket, it's (apparently) a multi-hex or bi-hex socket. So i may have more issues finding a tapered or thin walled one. Looks like this: I'll let you guys know what happens :) Quote Link to comment
fo0manchu
I believe thats a 12 point socket. What size are you looking for? Quote Link to comment
aintnobiscuit
Forgot to look before i left the house today, was just going to buy 12 and 14 because i know it's one of the two. I believe 14 though. I can tell with normal nuts but the 12 pt throws me off. Yeah, i don't know why there are like 5 names for this type of socket. It was hard to find the name online by searching in google lol. I couldn't find one anywhere (thin wall socket) so I bought a big metal file and a 3/8 driver for my drill. Just going to hit it with the file and see if i can thin it out a bit. Quote Link to comment
Laecaon
Drill, and take a grinder to it. I doubt a file will do much to a socket. Quote Link to comment
fo0manchu
Let me know if you can't get it to work. I got a lot of stuff and am pretty close to you. Quote Link to comment
aintnobiscuit
Wow, long day yesterday. Picked up a socket that fits from Home Depot. I spent a lot of time looking at different stores to find one, geez. Anyway, going out to dim sum and to get my nephew a train and then there will be oics It turns out the size is standard not metric. The standard socket is slightly smaller than the metric counterpart. The 12 point socket set I had was designed for both metric and standard so there was slight play and they were largish. I may still have to turn this one down a bit but it would be a lot less than the other. Quote Link to comment
aintnobiscuit
Although I don't have a picture of torquing the head down, I torqued it down in 3 steps. 26, 55, 80lbs. Loosened the bolts all the way and did the same thing again. Then i put the cams back in and the tensioner pulley back on And then, of course, came the idler pulley Lining up dem timin marks, son. It's a damn shame all the shiny bits will be covered when the engine is assembled. Yeah, i know this isn't very interesting. I had to time the cams and crank so they were a certain distance apart. Which was actually kind of time consuming. Well, not that, but getting the belt on was time consuming. Here's the timing belt installed. I would LOVE to run the motor like this. It looks so nice. Reminds me of a motorcycle :) Installed the upper and lower timing covers. I cleaned the bottom one, and the upper one's inside. I need to clean the upper's outside after i put the engine in the bay. So i've been installing all the gaskets i can find in the gasket kit. One of them i was super stoked on was the rocker cover gaskets. Just a side view Another view Oil pickup. I torqued every single bolt to the spec it says in the FSM. That's partly why this has taken so damn long. Checking and rechecking. Rear main seal, retainer and rear oil pan gasket. Oil filter plate And then the oil pan, naturally. Engine right side up. Installed the CAS. Put the studs in the water pump and installed the pulley I needed somewhere to store the motor overnight as one of the bolts holding my engine on the engine stand bent/broke. Everywhere near my house was closed so I had it resting on my old socket set box on top of a crate (which i'm sure some of you noticed). I decided that was not the best place to leave it so I put the hoist in the garage and picked the engine up, then set it on it's mounts. I need to do the flywheel, clutch, pressure plate then i can install the motor. After that it's all easy. Should be done tonight. Hoping to fire it up and load the tune i was working on. :) Ended up not being able to work on the car at all on saturday and not until like 3 or 4 on sunday :( 1 Quote Link to comment

aintnobiscuit
Ughhh.... i'm trying, LOL! Wish i had more time than just Sunday night but I'm glad that it's this far. When I get home I have to clean the house because we're having family over for thanksgiving... but as soon as that's done I'm putting all the goodies on and i'm hoping to take a test drive :D If I can get that far, I'll do a video and of course, pictures will be up here tonight no matter how far I get. aintnobiscuit
Thanks :) turns out whenever i need something tool related i should not go to pep boys, autozone, kragen, ace hardware or anywhere else... i should just head straight to sears. IDK why i fight it. They have anything and everything related to automotive and normal tools. Quote Link to comment
Eagle_Adam
i get bagged on for them but i love my craftsmen stuff! they are open 7 days a week and i dont have to hunt down a tool truck http://community.ratsun.net/topic/31264-ahhh-cant-beat-the-smell-of-fresh-tools/ Quote Link to comment
aintnobiscuit
Why do people bag on your for having craftsman? I've never broken any of my craftsman stuff but i broke husky and others. I'm not going to try and find snap-on either.
