AZhitman
Confirmed the 3.7 ratio, confirmed it's LSD, but I'm not positive on the rest. Thanks guys! Quote Link to comment
thisismatt
R180. Not likely to be an LSD - what makes you say it is? Quote Link to comment
Ranman72
need pics of the depth of the pop out on the diff cover Quote Link to comment
thisismatt
It's an R180 for sure. You can tell by the spacing between the top two cover bolts and the cover itself on the R180 has a solid flat area where the mustache bolts are, rather than two flat spots on the R160. datzenmike
38311 is an R-180 housing. Can't make out the other numbers but if U3000 its from a 280z or 280zx (came in 3.364 and 3.545 ratios only) 810 (came in 3.70 ratio only) Quote Link to comment
AZhitman
R180. Not likely to be an LSD - what makes you say it is? Because I laid hands on it - it's not an open diff. Quote Link to comment

Can't make out the other numbers but if U3000 its from a 280z or 280zx (came in 3.364 and 3.545 ratios only) 810 (came in 3.70 ratio only) The other # is indeed U3000. This diff was in a stash of parts from a long-closed race shop that built 510's. From what I'm reading, the 810 didn't come with LSD, except maybe the U12 version in other markets, which leads me to believe it's been opened up and swapped internally (?). Alternatively, according to this site: http://www.classiczcars.com/forums/archive/index.php/t-1568.html "Maxima, Z, 810 and the 720 4X4 all used the same casting number on the diff housing which indicates the larger 115mm ring gear." I guess it wouldn't surprise me if they used a late-70's Z carrier and put an LSD in it for the track cars... Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Try twisting the axles in opposite directions. Pull the cover off. Could be welded. The K is on later R-180 diff cases, seen them on 720s, not sure when they changed. Quote Link to comment
AZhitman
Try twisting the axles in opposite directions. Pull the cover off. Could be welded.. Ah, that could be - They won't turn opposite (at least with the small amount of torque I'm able to put on them). Quote Link to comment
thisismatt
Because I laid hands on it - it's not an open diff. Yeah, I didn't say it was open, but R180 LSDs are exceedingly rare and it would be extremely odd to get one without being 100% sure of what you were buying in the first place. Quote Link to comment

AZhitman
...could be a true LSD also. Take cover off. The only way to be sure Roger that - Will check in with pics once I crack 'er open, Captain! Quote Link to comment
AZhitman
Yep indeedy. It's a R180 with 3.70 gears and welded. I think I'll probably sell it, since I don't want to use a welded diff in my street car. Quote Link to comment
yellowdatsun
Aww man, that sucks. Looks like neither of us should buy things that we aren't *100%* positive about. Dangit. Quote Link to comment
AZhitman
Yep. Oh well. Someone might have a use for it (it'd be great in a drag / drift machine). Quote Link to comment

datzenmike
510 sedan but not the 510 wagon, the 610 sedan and hard tops but not the 610 wagon. Quote Link to comment
AZhitman
This is an R180. It's also for sale, altho I'm pretty certain I'm not gonna try and ship it. :( Quote Link to comment
