AZhitman
Need crank, rods, pistons and head... Any companies out there making new stuff for the J13? Suppose I could buy a donor motor, but it'd be nice to have access to new stuff too! Thanks in advance for any advice, guys. Quote Link to comment
Pacific coast Datsun
There used to be a company in Iowa that sold internal engine parts for the J-13. Sorry i cant remember their name. Quote Link to comment
ggzilla
* You can order pistons from Arias (about $100 each) * Nissan has the rods in their 2011 catalog (about $150 each) I don't think anyone sells new heads, unless you can find New Old Stock, maybe find it on eBay if you look every week. A Rebuilt head is more likely. Quote Link to comment
zed1
Many of the Metropolitan Engine Parts are interchangeable with the J13. http://www.king-cart.com/cgi-bin/cart.cgi?store=kipmotor&new_frontpage=Metropolitan_Engine&cart_id=44345.27692&exchange=&exact_match=on Equipment Depot can access new Nissan forklift parts (the J13 was used in several of the 1960-1970s forklifts). http://eq-depot.com/ If you are needing "standard" sized pistons, I have one (1) new and three (3) used available. I also have two (2) new pushrods available. Rings sets occasionally appear on ebay. Keith Quote Link to comment

Keith The Nash and later Hudson [yes there was a Hudson version after the merger with Nash-Kelvinator] Metropolitan used the MG-A drive train, so early MG and Midget/Sprite parts are worth a look. My son in law was restoring a MG-TD and couldn't find a head gasket without a long special order delay. I showed him a parts breakdown of the Nissan J13, he bought that head gasket from the local Nissan dealer and it fit perfectly on his block. Quote Link to comment
johns66
The MG-A "B" series (3 main bearing) engine, found in found in MG A's early B's, metros and other british cars, and, in some India automobiles, is very similar to our J 13 engines, but they're not exact. The J13 block is about one inch or so shorter (verticle) and so, the rods are too. I think the blocks are the same length. If anyone has the measurements to the J13 crank, I can measure my MGA crank and compare. If they are the same, brand new forged steel crankshafts are avalible from Moss Motors for $795. The heads may be the same too. When I compare my L520 engine and MGA engine, the heads look identical. The only difference is in the way the valve covers are attached. The MG uses two threaded posts coming off the rockershaft pedestals vs the J13 valve cover attaches with a series of screws around the periphal edges of the valve cover. If they are the same, new aluminum alloy heads are avalible too, from many of the British carpart suppliers. Moss price is $1395, assembled. Cross-flow heads are avalible too, but more $$. I think the heads are made by Pierce Manifolds, somewhere here in the US. Moss Motors is a huge supplier of British car parts, located in California. They're Ph # is 800-667-7872. Sprite and Midget engine parts are probably too small and won't fit the J13. They are British "A" series engines, with cc range of 850cc to 1300cc. Smaller cranks, rods, heads etc. I'm no expert, just an owner of a few old cars, but hopfully the above info is correct. Quote Link to comment
AZhitman
I own a '62 Metropolitan, and I certainly appreciate the info, but I'd like to keep this simple, and restricted to KNOWN compatible parts (J13-specific). With 14 cars in the stable, it doesn't take much to get me confused. :) Quote Link to comment

Thanks much! Quote Link to comment
AZhitman
Equipment Depot can access new Nissan forklift parts (the J13 was used in several of the 1960-1970s forklifts). EQdepot was useless... Wouldn't even consider helping me once I said it was for an automotive application. :( Quote Link to comment
datsunaholic
Well, don't tell them. Trust me, it's easier to not let them know. The pistons, rods, bearings, blocks, and probably even the heads are the same. The timing cover is different, the crank MIGHT be different (or it might not) and the cam IS different. I have one set that I'm keeping for if/when I rebuild any of my J13s or E1s (the pistons are identical). They're Federal Mogul part # 12157P. Not that I could find any more. Can't remember where I got them, it was closeout though. Quote Link to comment
AZhitman
The first question they asked me: What's the model # of the forklift? :) Quote Link to comment
datsunaholic
Hmm... "The data plate fell off, but I think it's a FG204." Actually I can't find any J13 forklift models, just J15, J16, and J18. Quote Link to comment
ggzilla
Why would you want new rods? The J13 ones are very good, and rarely go bad. If they get bent, a good used one is better than a brand new one. Quote Link to comment
AZhitman
I don't mind used ones - Just hard to locate a J13 that's not either in use or worth dismantling for parts. :) Quote Link to comment
ggzilla
Not hard to find them here. The Ratsun "wrecking yard report" had some listed last week. Quote Link to comment
KFunk740
I've got a freshly rebuilt J13 in my L320, and the guy that did the rebuild (NL320Nick) used D16 pistons. They're a little bit dished instead of flat, so the compression is a bit lower. For info on the build see Nick's posts here: http://forums.nicocl...is-t375611.html Quote Link to comment
ggzilla
What is D16 pistons? Something from a Honde? A rebuild does not normally call for new pistons, unless the existing pistons are damaged. Quote Link to comment
