How important is it to use syncing tool to sync carbs

How important is it to use a syncing tool when syncing dual 44phh mikuni carbs, or is it possible without one? Im guessing no. but I wanted to ask somebody else.

I'd say it's pretty important.

 

 

You want your car to run consistent right?

 

 

 

 

 

There may be a trick to tuning it without one though, and just using a single vacuum gauge. I read about it a while back when I was wanting to use ITB's

2 vacuum gauges on mani, 1 for each carb...if you have the ports of course

Not using a uni-sync is like dividing by zero.

I would imagine that it is way more accurate than tuning by ear and smell.

 

I would also believe, short of having a 5-wire wideband AFR guage, that a unisync is the definitive way.

Anything else, and you're just guessing.

You can use the uni-syn, listen with a hose or... the vacuum gauges...basically measuring the amount of air getting sucked into the engine, relative to each carb, which has to be the same

 

Then use the wide band to dial the mixture in

It'll run, but most likely idle horribly, and have a loss in power.

All the uni-syn does is help to adjust the idle air volume so that multiple carbs are drawing the same amount of air. Otherwise two cylinders are holding the idle and two are not doing enough work. You can do the same with a piece of garden hose held at the throttle opening. Adjust till the hiss sound is the same.

I have those synch's as well draker for my cb550's, I'd recommend spending the extra $50 for a decent one.

my ear tune is pretty dead on to the sync.

just as Ski,says....i you are old enough, hm hm i mean, experimented enough you can do it by ear, which is not my case,I use my uni-syn.
