Not using a uni-sync is like dividing by zero.

You're fucked without it.

 

 

 

Just kidding.

I would imagine that it is way more accurate than tuning by ear and smell.

 

I would also believe, short of having a 5-wire wideband AFR guage, that a unisync is the definitive way.

Anything else, and you're just guessing.

All the uni-syn does is help to adjust the idle air volume so that multiple carbs are drawing the same amount of air. Otherwise two cylinders are holding the idle and two are not doing enough work. You can do the same with a piece of garden hose held at the throttle opening. Adjust till the hiss sound is the same.
