simple fix.

show us your wiring.

the 521 will have 2wires butted together that goes to the +side of coil. Blk red I believe on my 72.

You should get 12volt swhen key is ON.

and 12volts when key in Start.

To ck this remove the starter wire. remove the wire at the coil. than ck for voltages.

hopefully you wired the matchbox correctly.

If not using a ballast resisitor you need a EI coil.

points use a ballast resisitor and a 1.6 ohm coil.

so use the correct stuff

most 521s the fuse box needs a cleaning or rplacement fuses.

If you are running a ballast resistor it is broken or not connected up properly.

It was the ballast resistor the black/red wire running from the coil to the resistor wasn't hooked up. The plastic sleeve that covers the connector made it seem like it was pushed on all the way but the connector wasn't touching the resistor at all. Now runs fine except a whine coming from the Weber carburetor.

thanks for the help. SM

whine coming from the Weber carburetor?????????

choke still on? is the plate still closed?

No the plate is not closed. The carb looks like it might be missing some pieces but I don't know what pieces are missing, since I have only used the stock Hitachi. Will try to post pics tomorrow.
