wrong clutch?

when i bought my 521 back in febuary, the PO gave me an extra clutch that he said is for my truck. This was a used clutch and i decided that if i was going to go to the trouble of replacing it, i would want something new in there. so i recently bought a clutch from Schucks, and compared it to the one the PO said was for my truck and they were different. the one from schucks was smaller than the one from the PO. im just trying to figure out if schucks sold me the wrong clutch, or if the PO told me wrong? I have a stock L16 with 4 speed.

the one on the left is the one i bought from schucks

The stock one should be 200mm across the friction disc so likely Schucks sold you the correct one and the PO was mistaken. The larger one is likely a 225mm one for the later L18 and L20B truck motors.

No, you cannot use the larger one. The flywheel determines the clutch size that can be used. Well if you can find the rare '74 truck 5 bolt L18 flywheel you could.

Thanks!

ya my slave cylinder is adjusted all the way out, there is hardly anything left on it :hmm:

and for the warenty on it to be enacted i have to have my flywheel turned.

I havent decided if im going to blue lake yet. i really want to but i have yet to take my truck past 60 mph for more than 5 mins.....

The L-series flywheels are all the same diameter, it's the clutch/pressure plate diameter that's different. Mike already said above- only sizes were 200mm, 225mm, and 240mm.

The 720 trucks with the Z24 used the 240mm clutch. It'll fit a L20B but not all L-series transmissions have enough clearance, and you'll need the matching throwout bearing collar for the clutch.

sweet thank you, king rat! one more thing, what vehicle came with these flywheels so i know what clutch to order?

200mm: All L-series 521s, 510s (both PL510 and A10), 610, 710, '72-73 620, '77-79 200SX.

225mm: 74-79 620, '80 720, 240/260/280Z, 280ZX non-turbo 2-seat, '80-83 200SX, all 810s.

240mm: 280ZX Turbo, 280ZX 2+2, 83+ 720.

I don't know about 81-82 720s (Z22). I think they used 240mms.

Thanks, since I run 85-86 720 5 sp. shortshaft transmissions, the big discs/covers are not an issue. I was asking because I have never seen a flywheel(except the one I have) with the clutch cover bolts so close to the edge of the flywheel before, the clutch cover I have was the same size as the flywheel iself, never seen that before, guess I should have kept all those Z24 block flywheels I scrapped out with the blown engines.

Doug I think the Z22s were all 225mm... but I've heard that all 4x4s had 240mm regardless of motor? I did pull a 240mm from an '80 4x4 with the L20B but the motor had obviously been swapped. After all these years lots of parts got moved around.
