Datsun to make a return in emerging markets?

Recommended Posts

I just read this on a site posted on july 7th.

Under the wing of parent company Nissan, new Datsun models might be released into emerging markets in the coming years. The brand will apparently be set up to provide these markets with entry-level vehicles, with prices starting at around the $5000 mark.

The vehicles are likely to be sold in markets such as China and India, and other smaller markets such as those found in Latin America, parts of Africa and parts of Eastern Europe.

Details of the cars haven’t been confirmed yet as Nissan hasn’t officially announced the move, but the cars are expected to feature about the same level of equipment as the original classics.

The last Datsuns that went on sale in Australia were the Datsun 1200 ute in 1985 and the Datsun 280ZX in 1982. Nissan eventually phased out the Datsun brand in most markets by 1986.

Would you like to see the Datsun make a comeback?

And from this site

http://www.stuff.co.nz Nissan is reportedly planning to bring back Datsun as a budget brand for emerging nations.

The car brand indelibly linked with model names such as 240Z, Sunny and 1600SSS could be making a comeback.

Reports out of Japan suggest Nissan will bring back the Datsun nameplate, which was phased out in the 1980s, to be used on a number of cars designed specifically for emerging markets.

The new models will likely be launched as part of Nissan's ambitious "Power88" five-year plan, which will see the Japanese car maker and its subsidiaries release a new model every six weeks for six years.

According to Japanese news site The Nikkei, the Datsun-badged models will likely feature a price-tag "of around $5000" - but Nissan hasn't yet confirmed that the Datsun brand will return.

However, if it were to be revived, the upcoming Sunny small sedan - which is essentially a four-door version of the Micra hatch - could wear the well-known Datsun Sunny nameplate in places like

This is old news and has been discussed here. Just my opinion but I don't want my Datsun cheapened by them becoming common place again. Remember Nissan made a HL510 (A-10) in the late 70s to capitalize on the fame of the earlier PL510??? Real 510 owners despise them and use them for parts. Same with the DATSUN name and vehicles. Keep them rare and adored by their owners.
