Matchbox conversion coil question

Recommended Posts

Ready to do the matchbox conversion on the A12 in my 73 1200. I have been looking at the HOw to posted by Pacific coast Datsun, but am unsure of my coil. The car had a MSD Blaster 2 coil in it when I got it, running through the ballast resistor. So the perhaps simple question it whether or not to run the ballast with this coil. The write-up says not to with the proper coil but I don't know if this one is. Anyone know?

Thanks

The *ONLY* reason for a resistor coil ( or wire in the coil circuit) is to keep from burnin points too fast. Remove the ballast, and wire up a relay that kicks full alternator voltage in when you put the hammer down. That'd give you the longevity of V-reduced point load @ part throttle, but when you kick it in give it a full 14v to the coil~ resulting in roughly a 20% increase in spark voltage! If this *sparks* your interest I'll send you the schematic...

wire up a relay that kicks full alternator voltage ????

Why ???it gets the full voltage cause the ballast is gone. Unless your think the swithc resisitance is klling the extra power. Most conversions work with just wire up to the switchable 12v wire that went to the ballast.

People forget you got alot more current running thrut eh key switch if thats what you mean. it could get HOT.

also one should hook up the HOT START wire(wire that has 12v on START) with the ON wire at the +side of the coil.

I'm no expert, but I destroyed an Ignitor module by running too many amps through it on my L18. I modified the ballast by shortening the wire until the resistance was 3.9 amps. It did last many miles before it died...
