SSC's Project Phoenix -'69 510

Recommended Posts

Decided to start a thread on the Datsun 510 and the revitalizion process. I though Project Phoenix would be fitting since I'm raising it from the ashes and I thought that I would commemorate it to the courageous people of Japan who are doing the same. I bought it as a all original Datsun 510. It has 56000 original miles with oxidized 42 year old paint job. I am the fourth owner but the original owner just sold the car about 2-3 years ago. It truly was a old lady car as the car grew old with the original owners. There was very minimal surface rust and one small rusted out portion on the passenger side rocker. My plan is to create a very classic looking datsun with a nostalgic beach cruiser flair while making it handle better and get more power while retaining mpg, reliablity and originality. We'll see how this goes!

Here's the day I picked her up.

Exterior - Small Rust spots that I will meticulously repair rather than repainting the 42 yr old paint.

Next thing I decided to do was to chemically Stop all the surface rust spots and convert it into primer. This stuff is so good that you can weld on the rusted areas after you treat it. This is a meticulous process but at least I can say that its the original paint job when people see it.

We have a mutual friend, Wes. He tagged me in your facebook photos. Still is an awesome car man.

Yeh, I remember. Hope you've been well bro!

Very carefully, remove the stock front struts, install some 280zx struts with coilovers. Very carefully install rear coilovers. Very carefully lower the car. Not too low! Then... Enjoy driving that sexy sexy beast.

Does it really make that big of a difference?! I wanted to keep it all original but if thats a easy enough mod thats worth the time and easy to reverse, than it may be worth it!

i would keep this stock and buy a beater to(save) beat on

But this is me. Just not to many stock ones around(worth more IMHO)

I'm starting to think that more and more. It's just starting to look so clean now!

Next thing I needed to do was bring the paint back from the dead. I hand polished the whole car with the a reverse oxidation polish. I did some side by side shots to show you guys the difference between the old paint and new paint. Car came out nice, but I think I'm going to lay down one more coat to really make it pop!
