zianian
Rear end clunks. Only when turning right from a stop. Especially from 1st to 2nd. It's getting worse :( Gotta baby them turns for now. No biggie... we'll catch up to you soon after we straighten the wheels and stomp gas thingy. Time to get to know my LSD. I think it's an LSD. Quote Link to comment

510T
Yeah you do not want one to let go... happened to me twice now. Quote Link to comment
zianian
U joints and shafts seem solid as a rock. I have had and heard plenty of U joints in the past (not on 510s) and this seems different. What did your bad ujoints sound like? and when? all gears? R to 1st? Straight line or turns? Etc? Did they/it have much play/slop that you could feel/see from looking at and tugging at turning them? I have been reading up on the Subaru rear ends and it sounds like some of them are netorious for clunking on the right side. But I think that clunk has to do with upper right rear suspension components. Maybe diff bushing? Maybe suspension? Maybe in the diff? Maybe even u joints. lol Might try mounting the GoPro under there. See if it shows anything. Quote Link to comment
510T
I'd check all of the above, my first u joint clunked for a little while out of 1st gear if I recall correctly before going and the second time it just went kablooey. Give the whole rear sub frame and driveline a good once over. Quote Link to comment
zianian
Will do Baba. Thanks. Quote Link to comment
zianian
I think I "fixed" it.. Jacked it up in the back for the first time. Gave it a once over. (darn... forgot to take pictures re: ID the diff). Didn't see anything outta sorts. Thought I might as well lower the rear end back down a bit to let it sit a bit lower. Sean raised it all around a few inches for the trip from TX. I lowered front a bit weeks back. 2" down... I think. 1" too much. It rubbed. F that. Put it away for the night. Changed dinner plans. But anyways... Before I lowered it I noticed where springs were rubbing on shock towers a bit. Lubed it in those spots. Just happened to buy a grease gun at a yardsale on Sat. Good timing. $2 Raised it up a bit again this morning. Drove it. No more clunk. Neat. Now onto why it bogs a bit at initial throttle commencement. Ran sorta funny ever since I got caught in that rain. And tuner... Call tuner. And drive. That goes without sayin'. Quote Link to comment
zianian
Well after 4 years with the GS300 I grew bored of it and decided that I wanted something fun to drive for a daily again. So I promptly listed it around on a few forums and started looking for something. I wasn’t sure what I wanted at that point and was initially looking for a swapped SC300 or a well taken care of and modified 240. I later came across a thread somewhere with some bad ass OG Japanese rides and I then got hooked in the idea of owning one. At one point had a trade worked out for a 72’ Celica coupe in Kentucky but with bad timing and bad weather it didn’t end up working out before the guy had a cash offer for it. After a bit more looking around I happened upon this 1971 4dr from Cali that, in looks, reminded me of the Datsun my parents had when I was growing up. So I contacted the owner and worked out a good deal, put a deposit down on it and had it on the way here a couple weeks later. It finally showed up mid last week and man… this thing smaller than I remember! Being 6’2” 230 it’s a bitch to get in and out of but once you get seated there is plenty of room and it’s actually comfy. Driving it is a blast and the handling it has is way better than I had expected. It’s also a bit faster than I thought it was going to be and once the VVL kicks in the thing just screams. The crap tune it has is on it is rich as hell but it runs great, I haven’t had a chance to find a place to weight it yet but the guy said it was right around 2000lbs. With some cams, lightweight flywheel and a good tune this thing will be a beast. Body and panel wise it is very solid, some surface rust here and there but nothing bad. The interior is pretty much stripped aside from the carpet and door panels so driving in the rain is going to be LOUD! macgyver
What rear were you running? Key word: were Quote Link to comment
zianian
I don't even know what is in it now. Subaru JDM is what the add said (also Sean's first post this thread I think). What was in there may have been welded? On gravel esp. and on turns it felt and sounded like the rear wheels would skip a bit. Like both turning at same rate. Same with calling the tow guy Bob. Straight yesterday was OK. Turn just a touch and it was clatter clack city. Called AAA. No large chips or shards or even many tiny ones. (seeable) gears look OK. Can't see inside that inner gear thing and even if I could I wouldn't know what I'm looking at... Yet. Called a few tranny/gear shops. Would love to be able to just (have them?) drop a new diff(?) unit in it. Stout one. One that won't clatter clank so much... ever. For a while anyways. Any drop in posi thingies ideas/advice? Thanks. Tristin
Theres lots of options. Give the search bar a good use... theres lots of "posi thingies." I would suggest that you figure out what they are called to aid in better results though... Quote Link to comment
