Hmm, some cars will actually not allow certain readings til the car has cycled the onboard tests. If you clear the codes some cars will make you drive 100 miles to make sure everything is in order before giving out the "ok" on things like O2 readings, but an 82 shouldn't have those computer thingys in it.
