You have 2 gallons of coolant in the oil pan and 5 quarts of oil in the cooling system???? Could be a bad timing cover with a hole in the water pump cavity. Doesn't mean a crack unless you find one. hooliganPL620
could be but i didnt see any signs of long term leakage when i pulled the timing cover back was clean....im used to honda and toyota where this is usually a very bad sign but i bought the truck with the head off Quote Link to comment
Guest 510kamikazifreak
Whats funnier the hippie or the laugh   What Mike said, I don't follow. If there is that much oil or coolant thats a very noticable crack :o Quote Link to comment
izzo
was the block surface clean also prior to installing the head and head gasket? Quote Link to comment
hooliganPL620
didnt even get the head on bought it with the head already off and a burnt exhaust valve i had the head rebuilt bout a new chain kit, oil pump, water pump dizzy, etc. I was gonna drop the pan and check the bearings and the rings quick hone it and start reassembling....but after seeing all this it has to come out ive heard the l series dont crack i dunno much about em to be honest. Just really disheartening to see it puke coolant then see oil in the water pump Quote Link to comment
nismo dr
this makes absolutely no sense to me Quote Link to comment
Papi Chulo
How long did it take to separate the 2 gallons of coolant and 5 quarts of oil? EDIT: ^ohhh so it wasn't mixed, nvm then. The oil goes in at the top of the engine, at the valve cover. The coolant goes in the radiator. :P Quote Link to comment
Guest 510kamikazifreak
What L is it? L20b is a "bit" notorious for cracks but nothing like this  Quote Link to comment

Check block for cracks while its in the truck/car. Look ok? Good, build that shit and rock it :D If you see a crack, then yank it. L blocks are easy, and pretty much bullet proof, id be surprised if it had a crack. Quote Link to comment
hooliganPL620
any recomendations on hones rinng and bearings if its rebuildable Quote Link to comment

Guest 510kamikazifreak
L16 I am with h2theizzo on this, if you cannot see a crack,An L16 is as bulletproof as they get! Probably front cover or bad head gasket(due to not a very good surface prep(on the block/ head surface) ;) Quote Link to comment
izzo
If you hone it, use this kind of tool. You lube it WELL, put in cylinder, turn drill on and go up and down at a decent speed. doesnt take much, you are just trying to score the walls a little bit and make a chris-cross pattern. Check youtube for how to hone a cylinder, there are some good videos of how to on there from an ASE certified mechanic, cant get it wrong once you see it... super easy Quote Link to comment

wildmaninid
likelihood of block being cracked = not very. Sounds like this happened fast.....timing cover or improperly installed head gasket.........even an improperly installed intake or cracked intake could leak tons of water. I don't think i would head down the scrap it road just yet. Bill Quote Link to comment
