Gas stations typically put a "hold" on particular amount when you pre-pay with a card to verify funds. The amount is usually $50 but nowadays with $3+ gas it might be $75. The hold should have been released once the actual transaction took place for the correct amount, sometimes the "hold" lasts a day. If the "hold" caused an overdraft protection (savings transfer in some cases) that would be the reason for the Savings withdraw, but it still should have only actually charged the real amount.

The other possibility is the gas station attendant ran a skimmer scam and now has a copy of your card...

Wow, this thread derailed faster than a fat kid going after cake!

Yeah, some gas stations charge a $1 fee just to make sure there's money in the account, then bill the actual amount within three days. Sometimes that fee is $25, $50, or even $75. Usually you can tell if it's the surcharge because it will be an even amount.

The other thing is duplicate charges. We just switched to a new credit card system at work and the stupid thing loves to bill people twice. It will come back with a slip that says "Comm Error" after you run the card, and of couse that should mean it didn't go through so you run the card again, right? Well, sometimes it goes through anyway. I've been dealing with that since we switched to our "newer, better, safer" machines.

Check the statement, call your bank, if necessary call the business. We keep a credit card transaction record at NAPA, don't know if places like a gas station do or not or if they even store files there. Wouldn't think there would be much space since there's usually not an office or anything.

this topic happens to be my job field...

so here is how a transaction works at a gas station with a debit/credit card.

you swipe and enter pin (which is then encrypted), then the site will briefly contact your bank for a authorization. a authorization is a fake charge of anything from $1-100 depending on the site, basically its pinging your accnt to see if it would cover the charge, and most sites do go for $100 as the average tank now cost's $60-100 to fill.

at this point YOUR CARD INFO IS NO LONGER STORED ON THE SITE the authorization process generates a encrypted transaction number and that is used to identify the transaction with your bank. it is a one time use deal, meaning the site cannont re-submit that number for another transaction, your card MUST be swiped again to generate a new transaction number.

so now you pump, when your done you hang up the nozzle and the site will use that number to inform your bank you owe X for gas. now there are a few different systems out there, some are real time, some are batch based. a real time site will send the charge out right when it happens, a batch type site will send out all transactions for the day at one time (typically midnight local time).

now here's where 90% of customers get pissed off and yell at me while im explaining this to them.

the authorization and actual charge may show up on your accnt as 2 separate charges for 1 business day, which can F with your available balance. the authorization will be reversed eventually, and the actual charge will go through.

depending on your bank, you may only be able to use your card 1-3 times at a single location for fraud prevention.

kinda sounds to me like someone skimmed your card, always look at the card reader. does it look like someone just stuck it there? is it loose? is it on top of another card reader? did the guy pull it out from under the counter (actually happened)?

if possible always use your pin, that is the safest bet. its kinda a pita to get your pin, they have to watch you put it in. nothing wrong with being weird and covering one hand with the other while entering your pin. there is no card system out there that will have a cashier enter your pin, dont give it to anybody, not even the hot BBW you just met on craigslist, especially not her.

a lot of gas stations will pre-authorize a charge for the amount of 50.00, 75.00 or even 100.00 for gas, then charge you the correct amount, then remove the pre authorization usually that day or the next. They will usually do a pre authorization if you are getting gas at a station that is near a freeway and will usually be the higher amount as well. If that charge does not come off within a day or two, definitely dispute it with your card company. A lot of companies are starting to not charge the pre authorizations tho as it causes a lot of trouble when you are traveling cross country and getting gas constantly as you can use up your balance and also, multiple gas station charges in one day usually triggers fraud alerts on accounts.
