Jayden71
Well, the easiest motor to put in the 521 would be what it came with, an L16. No mods needed. KA's and sr's are gonna require lotsa work and lotsa money. Quote Link to comment

datzenmike
L16 easiest. L18 and L20B close second. Z20/22/24 with a tranny change third. KA E or DE or SR would require shorter drive shaft, tranny mount mods, shifter hole relocation, high pressure fuel pump, extensive EFI re-wiring, rad to match, conversion to internally regulated alternator, motor mount mods and much much more. The datsun kid
well that sucks o well does a l20b have alot more power or is it kinda the same? Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
About 15-20 more hp but it's the added torque that is impressive. I had an L20B from a '77 car in my '71 and it was a nice improvement. No rocket ship but nice. Plus if you add a cam it will give more back than if used in the smaller L16. There's no replacement for displacement. Quote Link to comment
INDY510
Do you need to put the L16 oil pan on the L20 in a 521? I know the 510 needs the stock L16 pan to fit Quote Link to comment
mike
Check around for a z22 in good running condition and put an open chamber L head on it (LZ22 hybrid) Youll need the front timing cover and timing gears and chain off of an L20 and the oil pan/pickup tube off of the L16 that you have now. Put a 5 speed behind it and find some more highway friendly gears out of a 720. If youve got a datsun rich wrecking yard near you it would be easy to "build" one of these in the yard and take it home to go through it. It will put a smile on your face and its all bolt together datsun stuff. If that sounds like too much of a pain just get this guy http://community.ratsun.net/topic/22753-l20b-wdogleg-transmision/ Quote Link to comment
Phixius
I have a L16 in my 521 and a L20 in my 510. And my 510 is a lot more "peppy". It will be a noticable difference. like datzenmike said, no rocket ship. But, I think its gonna be worth it. Quote Link to comment

tdaaj
Do you need to put the L16 oil pan on the L20 in a 521? I know the 510 needs the stock L16 pan to fit pans are not engine specific, they are car/truck specific. if you go to do an l series engine swap, keep the oil pan and sump of that vehicle and swap to the new engine. most all the pans have the same bolt pattern but every model of vehicle has a different cross member and position of the engine. HRH
Put a Lamborghini V12 in it! It's really easy to fit...in the bed! :D Quote Link to comment
