Stupid_fast
So... Stripped the interior to fix the wiring. Then I joined HybridZ and found a for sale thread. The turbo has 0 shaft play, less than 5k miles. Also the timing chain was changed. I traded the 3.91 N/A diff for the 3.54 turbo diff, put the N/A axles on it. Also installed the turbo fuel pump. Swaybar + bushings + cut springs... Decent temporary suspension setup. Back on the ground and ready for the L28e to be pulled ... Quote Link to comment
Stupid_fast
A new idea... The result. Flipped overload modded pack on the left, added flipped truck kit on the right. putting them on the car tonight. Quote Link to comment
Stupid_fast
So that suspension setup did not work, so I did this. I flipped the 3rd leaf onto the top of the pack, and added a truck add-a-leaf in place where the 3rd leaf use to be and then used spring clamps for more stiff. So now its a ton more stiff in the rear, A ton less body roll. I can kick the back end out on a corner now! And I changed the gearbox to an 83 280zx one. Now needs more low. And its running again! Now i have another driver while I finish the ZX. Quote Link to comment
flipsteresis
Awesome thread!! - got a few questions - I am building my 83 goon - What did you use to clean the rims?!? looks sweet - What did you finally do for painting brake components? which product did you use ? great ratsun! Stupid_fast
Awesome thread!! - got a few questions - I am building my 83 goon - What did you use to clean the rims?!? looks sweet - What did you finally do for painting brake components? which product did you use ? great ratsun! Thanks! I just used some wheel cleaner, meguiars, black magic, ect all those brands pretty much work the same. If the rims arent shiny after that, you'd have to use a polishing compound like mothers aluminum polish and an electric drill attachment to really get them shiny. Then I use a soft brush after the wheel has been soaking for a few seconds in the cleaner, to get all the brake dust and dirt loose. Works great on my Konigs. I ended up not painting the front brakes, I just left them rusty as I'm going to go with ZX brakes and calipers soon. I just cleaned them up with a metal brush and some grease in any points that needed movement. They work fine. For the rear brakes I just used some rattle can primer and grey paint. DeviousPsycho620
[quote name="Stupid_fast" - And also, an orange 5 ball for a shift knob which i'm going to drill out and epoxy onto the zx shift rod I bought. I love the size and everything. Unfortunately part of mine broke off last night while shifting... :crying: I'm probably going to get another one and properly drill and tap it out this time. Right now its just glued on and its not the best solution. @vuk, thanks ! My friend who lives by me was impressed by my rear suspension setup for the cost, and asked me to develop a leaf combination that does not require blocks for his KA stock axle goon. Hoping for 2" drop ... But my current combination is at most 1/2" lower than stock leafs. I'm going to hit some wrecking yards to find some leafs, once I have the setup complete I'll post a write-up about my budget bolt-on wagon rear setup. Quote Link to comment
Stupid_fast
New wagon leaf spring setup on the cheap!! I still can't believe how much turn-in response and less under steer i'm getting ! Its great! almost completely neutral handling with 200lb from springs. So a lot of people have been flipping leafs in their wagons, which made me think... what are truck guys with h190's doing ? I found a thread where somebody mentioned using the flat leaf from a 720 pickup. So I went to the yard and picked up 720 leafs. Also a while ago I ordered a truck add-a-leaf kit from summit racing, thinking I could use that to add to my pack but it made my wagon way too low. I started messing about with different leaf combinations, and this is what I ended up with! the leaf configuration i ended up with is, 1 - flipped truck add-a-leaf 2 - Stock wagon main leaf 3 - 720 2nd leaf 4 - 720 3rd leaf(flat) 5 - stock wagon 3rd leaf A new center bolt, and some leaf spring clamps(for more stiff) I ended up with a great ride height for stock drive tunnel and great stiffness level. 720 leafs- Setup sitting on the axle- Ride height- Quote Link to comment
510T
I just read through the whole thread. You are doing a great job with this 510! I also think your current set of shades match the car better than the ones you found in the glovebox. B) Quote Link to comment

510T
Yeah it looked like it wanted moar, mine did too. You going to autocross it at all? ESCA in Sonoma County has their first event mid-March. I know there is also one at the Coliseum sometimes... Quote Link to comment
Stupid_fast
@bababooey, I've autocrossed my cressida and always wanted to take my 510 out but its never really been "ready". The engine tune or something has always been off enough to make me hesitant to take it out even though I've beaten it harder on the street. One of the reasons I bought this car initially was to use as a track day/weekend car... I'd love to go to some events, if you know of some good ones close by the area I'd love to check it out and maybe even some time competition between us. Quote Link to comment
Stupid_fast
This thread is due for an update... So I just post some pics over the passed few months.I have not done much to it, but I have a few pics I wanted to post. ADERP. Made it home and parked in the garage running perfect. Didn't find out until the next morning. So pulled apart and send head to machine shop for resurface.IMAG0554 by pherexion, on FlickrWTF ?! Those aren't stock valves. They're in fact 44mm valves. exhausts are stock 35mm.IMAG0556 by pherexion, on FlickrWait ... Those pistons aren't stock either.IMAG0546 by pherexion, on FlickrSo I've got a big valve 0.040 over L20b ... Not a stock one. Stupid_fast
I AINT UPDATE DIS HSIT ENOUGH. Working on my 510 like usual, getting like nothing done, screwing around with the carb tune. Bam. 9:30pm, steering mistake, went wide, rear right hit dirt, oversteer, countersteer, back wheel his storm drain, catch air, lands where you see it pictured. Entered corner at about 30mph, about where you see the tire marks in the dirt. Basicly trying to take the corner perfectly without cutting the inside. F*. Hella..... flush ??? That aint stretched last time I checked... Oh... Okay then. I guess I just, didn't have the bead. Worst of the damage landed on the fuel tank. Somehow I missed the body work, only damage on the quarter panel as shown... Pulled the axle/diff apart thinking I'd broken something, only to find everything in fine shape. Leaf spring bolt has seen better days. The cover won't stay on, whatever, sitting waiting for gas tank ( picking up tomorrow ) and waiting for my 4.375 center to be back from modification. I bought a new set of Konigs last weekend AAAnd so I've been working on this... and I got it running again finished up some wiring and started dialing in the ECCS junk. its cutting a bit on throttle, but at light throttle it torques fine enough to make it up hills and drive around reasonably. It made power in boost once with some fiddling with the wiring, something definitely is not happy. It cuts like its severely retarded and starts popping crazy out the exhaust most of the time when I get on it. Turbo seems to spool fine, cooling system working just fine. Maybe doesn't help that some wires are still not soldered, and that the ECU is at my feet laying on the floor. This is with a coil cut off the springs .... Rides so good with all the suspension and steering work!!! Seriously, why the hell is my NA so high ??? Thats all folks, more updates when I get the parts back and get the goon bolted back together. Oh and, haters gonna hate. osnap 9993 views.... its over NINE THOUSSAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA- ect. 1 Quote Link to comment
Stupid_fast
Okay so I keep forgetting to take pics, and I keep forgetting to update this thread. Ah well. After all the crashy crunchy parts I kinda threw everything back together. I picked up my welded up H190 center done by Rich at Daft Innovations, and threw in the 4.375 ring gear and carrier. IMAG1139 by pherexion, on Flickr IMAG1146 by pherexion, on Flickr So it turns out I guess I'm in a drift team now kinda. The day before the Historic J even Alex Datsun came out to work on his Z at my garage and we'd roll there together. Being the maiden voyage of his car beyond just some town trips around San Francisco there were some troubles with the Z. Fortunately he was able to roll out at about 1am ... A few hours before the show. After a long night of some basic mantainence, cleaning my car and Alex comic bombing the Z... We made it to the Historic J event! 9868743334_3d0db945b6_o by pherexion, on Flickr IMAG1192 by pherexion, on Flickr 9868782794_76da67d7c3_o by pherexion, on Flickr After historic J we went back to my house and crashed for a few hours having not slept the night before, after a good rest we headed out to meet with Thomas and his S14 to go to an 86 fest meet at the Toyota of Oakland. I didn't get any pics but I'm sure there are some around. Finally we all three headed back to San Francisco for some photoshoot and that ended the day. unfortunately the Z had a few issues ... but all that is covered over in his build thread!! Three of four cars, together, Team Feint Heart. The ruby S30 is not completed yet. IMAG1196 by pherexion, on Flickr Turns out I did bend something, the right stub axle hub was bent and wobbling pretty badly ... Lucky my neighbor with the goon has an axle so he said come swap the H190 setup from my 1200 onto my 510 wagon and its yours!! Sweet. Head out there for a few days of work and got both the wagons done. The 1200 has the axle pulled for a 4-link 8.8 setup! The Gooons... IMAG1249 by pherexion, on Flickr So after that there hasn't been much done ... some shenanigans and clutch kicks. I got the car back on the 195-50 tires and been driving around trying to fix out some bugs to get it ready for our skid pad event soon! With all the 510 drama the ZX has suffered no progress... 9868724986_6aa0902bc0_o by pherexion, on Flickr Latest update is the leaf spring setup, tried another combination that dropped it an inch. No wheel hop but the spring rate could be higher. Flipped add-a-leaf (supposed to raise 2"), main wagon leaf, main 720 truck leaf (cut bushing mounts and re-drilled center pin hole), 3rd flat truck leaf... Clamps and pinion angle shim. Cut bump stops 1". Slaps around more on big bumps, but overall a decent ride. Probably some due to the fact my right shock is blown. IMAG1361 by pherexion, on Flickr And that's how it sits as yesterday ... Waiting for another gearbox, drift spares, and its ready for the track. I have a few small accessories that I added as well I'll need to grab pictures of... IMAG1375 by pherexion, on Flickr And so I was able to get a bit done on the ZX as well. Pulled it out of the garage fired right up, took it around and fiddling with some EFI stuff I got it to stop cutting under boost. Doesn't make much power, but it runs and its smooth. Got it to the gas station for the first time in a long time. Ran great, I can't wait to get this thing legal and streetable. Driving it again has reminded me how wonderful these cars are as just touring cruisers ... Smooth easy fun ride even in its rough state. 9891297285_547a3e629a_o by pherexion, on Flickr edit. I made the pictures show up better. Oh ye and I super awesome'd my interior. IMAG1381 by pherexion, on Flickr Quote Link to comment
Stupid_fast
Sooo I swapped another gearbox ... and its worse than the other one. Dropped the 83 at the shop but I don't think it'll be ready in time. Going to swap back the gearbox I got with the car, at least to run this weekend for Our Star Bash skid pad. Clutch looks good this time. No problems. Everything seems pretty solid once I get the rebuilt gearbox back this thing should be a reliable driver!! IMAG1458 by pherexion, on Flickr IMAG1453 by pherexion, on Flickr Finally my tools are as organized as possible, a lot more productive not looking for that one wrench the whole time. IMAG1450 by pherexion, on Flickr Doing misc stuff while pulling the gearbox ... Decided to relocate the battery ground, Is there any problem running direct to the head? I'll probably run a strap to the block or starter, but this seems like a better place for the main ground. IMAG1455 by pherexion, on Flickr Found a leak at the oil pressure gauge, fixed ... IMAG1451 by pherexion, on Flickr Installing this tomorrow. I have an idea of where to fit it. Safety equipment, because racecar. IMAG1468 by pherexion, on Flickr Super coolguy JDM truck shifter, thanks to the idea from German AKA Akuzedmadex. Also catch can there. IMAG1446 by pherexion, on Flickr Also picked up my tires yesterday, started loading things for the skid pad this weekend! IMAG1445 by pherexion, on Flickr I need bumpers! I wanna tandem but I don't wanna tap those euro/JDM lights ... I'm thinking fiberglass ... something that I won't car if they break as long as the body is okay. That's it for tonight. banzai510(hainz)
on my 521 I run the ground to the head. should have kept that 390 GR diff. thats a good ratio 3.54 is too top heavy. Need faster Accel!!!!!!!!!!! Quote Link to comment
Stupid_fast
3.54 is stock for the 280zx !!! I drive it, it actually feels great with the T5 gearing. Remember, the T5 has the 3.5 1st gear, and the 0.780 5th. The 3.54 puts it in a nice ratio for the 2.8 liter motor. Turning 2500rpm @ 68mph it makes a great cruiser. the 510 has a 4.38. :) With the 83 late model gearbox it means I'm turning 3500rpm @ 70mph. Still acceptable for the 4cyl. Quote Link to comment
Stupid_fast
THIS THREAD HAS BARELY PROGRESSED A PAGE SINCE 2012. At Fatlace's word up I lost the whole tread of a tire around the axle and bent the brake line ... bending it back broke it so I replaced it. IMAG1622 by pherexion, on Flickr Also changed the axle bearing and finished off roasting those yokohamas. IMAG1653 by pherexion, on Flickr Did some work finalizing the wiring on the ZX, replaced the fusible link box with the non-burnt one. IMAG1626 by pherexion, on Flickr Drove the ZX to exhaust shop and got the catback welded up. IMAG1658 by pherexion, on Flickr Nice subtle quiet exhaust. Nobody yells at me to slow down when I'm going the speed limit! IMAG1660 by pherexion, on Flickr Just have to get it BAR'd and smogged now. IMAG1666 by pherexion, on Flickr Quote Link to comment

Stupid_fast
(Picture taken by Alex Datsun) Got my clutch, dropped it by the shop should have my car back soon... . . . not fun. Broken temp gauge and burst coolant hose ruin your day really quick. Next day everything apart, ordered everything I needed and dropped the head to be rebuilt. When I tore it apart it looks like this motor has never been taken apart except for the timing chain done !!! Head back from rebuild. Replaced the injector seals while I was there. Possible vacuum leak here. Torch + gauge cluster... 2 5/8 are just right for the stock dash. More torching, and everything is secure. Looks clean, I was expecting it to be harder to make it look really nice. Quote Link to comment
