metalmonkey47
What gauge/thickness metal should I use to make a dash? I don't want a flimsy dash, but I also don't want metal too thick to work with. Never done anything like this before, so I'm in-experianced with this. Quote Link to comment
izzo
old dattos run 18guage for the floors and body i think, that should be strong enough to use as a dash yet flexible enough to contour it how you want. Quote Link to comment

Pretty sure they aren't 18ga. 18ga is pretty thick sheet metal...I think most body panels are 20 or 22 gauge. Quote Link to comment

thisismatt
Yeah, I think I got some 18ga, or maybe even 20ga, that I'm doing my mini rear wheel tub with. Whichever it is, it's a lot thicker than I needed to match the stock metal :P Quote Link to comment
metalmonkey47
Wouldn't 22 even be a little thick for a dash? I was looking at this stuff here. Seems like maybe it would be about right. http://www.onlinemetals.com/merchant.cfm?pid=8090&step=4&showunits=inches&id=753&top_cat=60 Quote Link to comment

72 327
This one was from Summit (they no longer carry it), It was modified to fit, cut on both sides. It is 20 gauge. Pint paint cans molded in for the gauge pods. Quote Link to comment
metalmonkey47
Summit made those?? Thats pretty neat Quote Link to comment
metalmonkey47
I just got back from picking up a custom cut piece of 18 gauge aluminum cut to my dimensions from a metal place that my brother used to work for. Place is fucking sweet. Got a little bit extra also to extend my air dam out. Pics in a bit! Quote Link to comment

skunk
i want to do somthing kinda like that. I think im just going to use my dash frame and start welding stuff to it. Quote Link to comment
metalmonkey47
Why use the frame? I just pulled mine all together and gained some space behind the dash. It's mounting to the old frame mounts. Quote Link to comment
skunk
just the way i plan on shapeing it, ill end up cuting the dash frame here and there. I want to use lighter metal so the frame will to all the structural support. Quote Link to comment
NCRmtrsprts510
i made my own out of 18 gauge steel plate, cheap and easy, you dont have to chop the dash that much, just the tabs on the top and then rolled on some flat black paint. i think it only cost me about $4 and some time on the mill and grinder. Still gotta paint the dash frame tho and tuck those wires lol Quote Link to comment
metalmonkey47
Nice job man! Wish mine looked that good. What kind of speedo did you use and how much did it cost?? I've been looking for one for sometime now. Quote Link to comment

I've been looking for one for sometime now. thanks, its an autometer speedo, i had that one laying around, but since i did the ca18 swap i need the electrical gauge for the speed sensor which is about $200. so the mechanical one is just sitting in there haha but here is a link to the 120mph mechanical one i have -- http://www.summitracing.com/parts/ATM-5892/ Quote Link to comment
