S13 Redtop ~90-94 is the best bang for your buck IMHO right now. There is a ton of Aftermarket Support and it's plain easy to wire into anything.

Click Here for that great thread.

Also Click Here for an Awesome SR20DET Refresh Thread.

It's a plain crapshoot to find a good vendor for them, especially on ebay... Some do compression tests and video it for you, some do tests and can email the report to you... In the end, it's probably worth refreshing the whole setup no matter what and not going with the cheapest vendor, as some are horrible.

Cost adds up pretty quick, so if you are thinking about doing it on the cheap... probably look to another swap as when you add in fuel system/mounts/refresh materials/etc... it can add thousands. Although, I'm picky and you can probably do it cheaper if you don't care about looks and such.

I'm at that point in my 240z build and sourced and engine from a Hybridz.org member and it shipped today with new ACT Stage II clutch, New CAS, New 240z vildini mount, modified and cut/refreshed driveshaft, and Greddy Profec B Spec II Boost Controller NIB for 2300 shipped, which is a stellar deal, as if you add all those up, it breaks out over 2800, even if you source the cheapest ebay seller, which I wouldn't suggest, and get good prices on parts.

Don't be tempted by the 1700 dollar ebay sr20det sellers, as if you google any of them, there's a ton of negative feedback and bad customer stories.

There's a ton of suggestions if you search 240sx and other forums and you'll just have to pick which vendor you want to risk it with based on reviews and recommendations you can find online.

FWIW motor is illegal to swap into your car in Cali

Very true very true sad but true .. and its a good thing to remember.. we arent all immune to the state and its fines because our cars are smog "exempt" I heard though if you get stopped and told you have an "illegal" motor most of the time you can just pay a fine that comes in the mail sometimes it aint cheap .. but as long as you pay they dont care... you only go to court if you want to contest it. not sure if its true or not .. but thats what i heard.

.... Also Ide like to point out that california is full of crazy laws no one gives a shit about..

for instance

In Baldwin Park California, the law states nobody is allowed to ride a bicycle in a swimming pool.

Oh and my 2 cents on the original Question ... I agree best bet is to stick with the s13 sr20det they are cheaper to begin with, have a bit less power but unless you are leaving it bone stock the power difference is easy to make up with less $$$ starting from s13 sr... better parts support and parts tend to be a bit cheaper than those for s14 / s15 motorsets .. If you can find a blacktop s13 it means its a later model and thus a bit newer .. beware a lot of people try to sell redtops as blacktops.. there is a lot of info on the web about the differences.. and what to look for.

And yes the cost adds up.... fast! Beware buying second hand sr20's in the US the best tip I can give you is spend the extra cash to get the motor from a good source .. think about it this is the most popular aftermarket motor in the US at the moment.. people buy em beat em and resell em all the time.

I got my red top from a guy on the east coast for 1650 shipped to my front door, but did not come with AFM and ignitor chip, but everything else Fired right up with no problems. I got the black top from a guy in texas (JDM Engine Corp)for 1750 shipped with everything, should be fired up by next week. The guy in texas took awhile to ship and i had to pick it up an hour away. I would get one from the east, never again from Tex!

you left off... if is not up to the emission standards of the vehicle it was removed from.

the swap itself is not illegal, not meeting the crazy CA standards is.
