Cuts metal like mad
A great replacement to the old L-series shifter is the napsZ shifter, they take the newer style shift knobs (just like a 240sx), and they are beefier that the old L shifter... something to consider. Link to comment
datzenmike
This is the older style tranny ears that hold the shifter pin. http://i138.photobucket.com/albums/q251/datzenmike/Tranny/transFS5W71Bshifter77-80Large.jpg[/img]"] This is the later type used on most 280zx cars. Note the shifter pin is higher which moves the fulcrum point higher as well giving a shorter throw shift. The shifters were shorter as well even on the 720 trucks. http://i138.photobucket.com/albums/q251/datzenmike/Tranny/transFS5W71Bshifter80-86Large.jpg[/img]"] Instead of the two small plastic bushings around the shifter pin like on the old style, the newer ones have this: http://i138.photobucket.com/albums/q251/datzenmike/Tranny/720shifter006Large.jpg[/img]"] The pin is supported by these two beefy plastic parts with a spring at the bottom inside the shifter cavity. http://i138.photobucket.com/albums/q251/datzenmike/Tranny/720shifter005Large.jpg[/img]"] The later short shifters can be used on the old style tranny ears by flipping the two plastic bushings and place the spring at the top. This lowers the pin down to the old style height. Like this: http://i138.photobucket.com/albums/q251/datzenmike/Tranny/720shifter010Large.jpg[/img]"] Here is an old style at top and two from the new style below: http://i138.photobucket.com/albums/q251/datzenmike/Tranny/shifterstyles001Large.jpg[/img]"] It would appear that the middle one will already fit the old style but the bottom one has been flipped. Pretty sure the bottom two were from a Z series tranny. Link to comment
fastdadd
i might play with making a short throw shifter but right now i just want to be able to drive it as soon as the doc clears me Link to comment
Jester
Nice photos Mike. i tried explaining this to someone else. I used a '81 200SX shifter in my KC. Did just as you explained and it works awesome. Best wishes to a speedy recovery FD!! Link to comment
