Shaggs2Dope
Whats goin on everyone. I was just browsin the internet lookin around for a good Datsun site and this looked like it fit the bill. I have a 1974 620 regular cab 2wd 4speed. My family bought it in 1975 used 1 year from a friend, drove all around the country and mexico and canada with a sixpac camper on the back as a kid. It has even traveled the ALCAN in Alaska. I dunno how many times the odometer has looped but its either 275k or 375k, Original engine. I restored the truck about 13 years ago as a project, as it was my first car. I have had many vehicles, but I never could ever get rid of the Datsun. It runs prefectly fine to this day, and is great working order, other than the secondary on the carb isn't kicking like it used to. This is the only pic I really have that is recent If you can look past all my Hondas, 00 CG3, 05 600RR, 08 GD3, you can see my 74 620. It has 5 slot American Mags with 245 tires on it. I also have Trailer/Camper load rating all terrains as well. When I got the car it was originally faded pukey yellow banana slug color with rust spots, a couple primer spots, and many years and miles of love. I repainted it a metallic dark blue with a lil green in it. I will have to clean her up this week and get some good pics. I used to want to lower the truck since it was 2wd but now I would actually like to lift it and do a 4wd swap with a 5 speed tranny. That way I can use it for even more hardcore truck usage, because I love wheeling. I have even wheeled the datsun til mud was coming over the bedrails and I was washing mud off the engine afterwards. I love this lil truck and want to make it Wheelable. I will try to get some more pics up later in the week. Quote Link to comment

datzenmike
Nice to see a '74. L18 motor was only used for that year. The 5spd is an over drive 5th so won't really give any advantage off road. If you get an '80-'83 280zx 5spd it will actually hurt performance because of the higher 1st gear. The '77-'78 620 would be good and the '79 620 the best with the lowest first, second and third gears. More (bigger) pictures of your truck! Quote Link to comment
Shaggs2Dope
Thanks for the comments guys. I got the truck when I was 13-14 to rebuild before I drove it. It is probably one of the hardest beaten vehicles on the planet, and even if I dont drive it for a while, or somethin breaks, its usually a 5 minute fix or adjustment. It used to have helper springs and a rear sway bar, but I cut it all off because it was just too bouncy without a camper on it anymore. The 1800 is such a great lil balanced motor, flat power curves. When I got it, it would only do about 60mph if you floored it. I have a couple different carbs for it. Used a Kawasaki KX250 Unifilter dual stage foam air cleaner with spark arrestor cage, and put on straight through pipes, and it would peg past the 100mph mark and keep going, even with 4 gears. Now the secondaries aren't opening and idle drops until it warms up. It really needs a once over, but it always works. I also have an extra 20gal tank that goes in the back, but it is off the truck right now. I am really interested in doing the 4 wheel disc brake conversion because I can't even count the number of times I almost killed myself in this truck due to the truck switching lanes by itself. I tried to never use the brakes and managed to blow out the original tranny, only having 3rd and reverse left. I swapped it for another one pulled from a yard and get chatter on 1st gear sometimes. I also want to make it 4wd, and clear some 33s or 35s. This seems like the biggest project. I'm not lookin to do an engine swap, as I love lil 4 banger carbed engine, the truck just wont die. I have been amazed at what I have gotten through with the 2wd tho. what LSD setups will work best for off roading? I am also checking which route is the best way to do it. I have heard about 3 different ways to do this, but really wonder the pros and cons of each setup. Like running the jeep parts vs trying to find a 720 chassis. And I will take some pics this week. I don't have the car at my house, as I ran out of parking spaces. Its a good lookin lil truck for what it's been through. Quote Link to comment
Shaggs2Dope
Just snapped a couple pics with my cell phone. The car is kept at my parents house because I have more vehicles than driveway space(plus the mexicans on my street would steal it in a heartbeat). The paint will probably be redone later this year, even though the 10+ year old paintjob still looks pretty good. The interior and bed are all matching, the only part that didn't get painted was the engine bay, it's still yellow. I will either repaint it this same color because it actually looks really good on the Datsun, or a medium silver/gunmetal to match the rest of my fleet. nice lil side shot next to the sailboat kind of a fuzzy booty shot, wish it was clearer. The Ringmaster sticker on the right side of the bed has held up over a decade. and dwnshfter, heres another shot of the bike, its a 2005 CBR600RR Black Tribal edition(has gunmetal ghost flames in a honda wing pattern on the plastics), with Yoshimura CF exhaust with CF cone cap, Compretition werkes FE kit, LP smoked LED sidemarkers, 6000k HID with cutoff switch, 6000k SMT LED third eye, and some other goodies and its not just my Nick on here, its my plates Quote Link to comment
Shaggs2Dope
Laid 30 rolls of sod and powerwashed the bed and light once over wash and rinse for the ol 74, runs like a champ, although it started dieseling today, gotta check that out, clean and adjust the carb a bit. It has a new filter on it. MY FAVORITE!!! Quote Link to comment
sanitys
nice truck, but strip that bike down, bikes are like chicks, they look better naked :D Quote Link to comment
Shaggs2Dope
I'm workin on getting an 03 600RR with 3k miles an akra pipe, and strip it down and put a tygershark cage on it and reinforced subframe :) Plus I want a motard. Then I should have everything pretty much. Quote Link to comment
LCDC
welcome to the forum shaggs. I got a 74 with an L18 and a Manual choke weber with a 4 speed and it has mor kick then my 77 KC with an L20 and a weber on that. The 4 speed wraps it out at 60 miles an hour plus, and I need some work done on my front end. Its the rattle canned black one in my avatar. As far as my front end goes, i'm probably gonna drop it down about 2 inches and eventually put some fatty tires on 15s on the back and some low pros on 14s on the front and leave it as it is. a true ratsun ratrod. If anything goes 4 wheel drive it will be my KC, and my secret project truck, well other then the spoiler of putting a 4 link suspenion on it, thats all I can say fer now. Albieat, though, i'd leave that one the way it is and find another one so you can put 4 wheel drive under. Quote Link to comment

I think the main mod is the disc brakes for safety. This truck used to easily go over 100 with the needle pinned and doors rattling, with a real reminder of death by 4 drum brakes. It will probably get repainted, although the bed and engine bay and rear bumper are all that really need it. It is dieseling like crazy today, so gotta change settings on the carb, and raise the idle a lil bit. Dunno what's keeping secondaries from opening. I should have a couple carbs but I threw a lot of shit out of multiple garages. I have an OEM, a Weber, and I think a RedLine but i dunno, havent really driven this car in 11 years other than dump runs, I have a bunch of cars over the years. edit- I would like to have same basic bike for riding and racing, as stunting. The powerbands are similar, though my 05 has more pop and just all around feels better, the 03 could also make a great trackbike, But I wanna do a purpose built stunter. My buddy just got two 09's set up for him from his sponsors and they are badass. All he does is stunt ride. Edited April 6, 2009 by Shaggs2Dope Quote Link to comment
Steroid
Welcome. You found the right place!!! Are You in Northern or Southern California?? Lot's of other 4X4s on here. Most were done by outfits in the 70s such as Spencer Low's shop, Low Manifacturing. Most are gone now. I suggest trying to find a 4X4 conversion on a Datsun already done (such as at a wrecking yard) and carefully cut if off to add to Your frame. It IS more work though than it looks!! Shaggs2Dope
I'm in NorCal, 707 Sonoma County. I saw a 620 camo'd out and a 521 yesterday on black 18s or 20's, looked like a roller skate. I have a ton of tools and buddies that can help me make ANYTHING fit, but I almost wanna scrap my GF's LS400, since the body and interior are shot, and drop a nice big lexus V8 in the datsun. That would haul ass, and anything else too. Quote Link to comment

suprafast98
Nice bike bro. i have the same exact one with most of the same mods. ahhaha go figure. i have the 6k hid with a cf yoshi with cone, led 3rd light, flush mounts, competition werkz fender eliminator, power commander, had a guy do a custom shift indicator in my gauges and change the gauge lights to white and red needle, and i powder coated my rims a gloss black rather then matte black. Looks way better with the gloss, i don't know why either lol. We should go riding sometime if your out toward the eastbay area. Quote Link to comment

Shaggs2Dope
The Accord, Fit, and RR all now have 3000k HIGH beams or Fog Lamps. Also, the fit had major reconstructive fog lamp repairs, and a DIY intake mod, which has MPGs up to 37.7 from 32-33, and a lil on the butt dyno. It also got all LED markers, 4300k purple krypton headlamps. Both fogs actually have shattered lenses held together by laminX, and the housings were busted, gorilla glued, and coated with rubber vehicle undercoating and vibration damper for long lifetime with rock hits. Coated my pegs and Rearsets Gunmetal Metallic, which matches the paint scheme perfectly. Tripled Intake inlet size but left factory resonator with drains. Prevents hydrolock and acts as a CAI 4300k Purple Krypton Bulbs and 3000K coated OEM fogs Nice Shot of the Bike and Accord and here's a couple vids of the DIY intake Idle - super quiet http://vids.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=vids.individual&VideoID=55361816 Acceleration - Throaty Growl http://vids.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=vids.individual&VideoID=55363801 And I picked up a new pup, a Rhodesian Ridgeback/German Shepard mix, and we had to take some crazy gravel and dirt backroads to get the dog, and we picked her up in the fit, which is pretty low, heres a lil vid and a pic of the new pup And the new pup and m existing dog have been just playing non stop, tearing up all sorts of stuff as a game, including trying to eat the Digi-Cam, Laptop Power Cord, a ton of shoes, you name it. I spent the entire day DOGPROOFING the back yard, fixing fences, and opening the design as much as possible. I was gone all of 1 hour and everything was everywhere in a pile on the floor, like EVERYTHING. So, now I need Cabinets for all the things I DON'T want eaten. At least she heels, is potty trained, and a sweetheart. Once the yard modifications are done I can get back to tuning up the Datsun a bit. I also got a flat black billet grille that reminds me of the datsun front for my Fit, to prevent AC condenser damage. But I haven't gotten to it with all the Dog stuff this week. We are also dog-siting a CRAZY Jack Russel Terrier. Edited April 17, 2009 by Shaggs2Dope Quote Link to comment
sanitys
shaggs, nice work man on all the rides, for bike stuff i would recommend checking out customfighters.com Im not really active on the CF site anymore, but it definately has tons of info, and ideas and all that jazz... Lets see some more progress on the 620!!! Toss beamer lights on the 620. 80ish plus shipping on ebay, plus 20ish plus shipping for the harness, then you just need bulbs...search ebay for ellipsoid Quote Link to comment
Shaggs2Dope
What's the difference on the Bimmer lights? I was thinking of totally clear lens style high beams with 3000k Laminx Coating. I really need to vacuum the truck out more than anything, and fix the busted tray under the right side, and fix the idle or swap carbs. This car used to haul ass, and now it is a pain to get up to speed. My ultimate 620, would have an f20c S2000 motor swap or like a nissan SR20 or RB. Get mid 20's MPG and haul ass. 3500 for the engine/tranny/ecu, but then you gotta get shift linkage, and custom motor mounts and new radiator and fans and stuff. I figure it handles pretty decent for a truck since it has the Torsion Bars. How low can you get one with the factory suspension? This truck has been great over the years, I just wish my tires weren't so wide so they would tuck if lowered. I would love to just rebuild the truck like I did to this status when I was 14-15, because it really hauled balls, and seriously, it gets more pussy than all the coupes, bikes, cars, combined. nothin like a Shaggy 70's porno minitruck. I figure if we can build a 6000 dollar 13 second all motor car with an H22 swap, an S2000 swap would be cool, and easier without smog issues. Ran NO AC, NO PS, and HAULED ASS, liquified fresh tires in 3k miles. I also had a 93 Hyundai Elantra with mitsubishi 4g63 motor that was pretty quick. Had smog legality issues on the hatch and the hyundai. Cali is hella strict. Luckily, the 74 is now Exempt, I could put in anything I want. Quote Link to comment
sanitys
you pretty much just need the 5 1/4 rnd ellipsoid headlights from a beamer, do a little dremeling to your headlight buckets, run some new wires/relays, your done. Torison bars, and lowering...im sitting on shock bump stops while i wait for beebani to finish my mounts for the coilovers I picked up. Its dropped about 6 inches in the the rear, and for the front match i have no travel... motor swaps, id say go ka or sr. the least amount of money for the HP. You could always go V8, but i doubt your into that...Ill be doing a single cam ka swap in the near future, just seems all the bushings, and tools, and etc are nickle and diming me, havnt had the cash at hand to pick up a 91-97 hardbody parts truck for the motor/trans Quote Link to comment
