  1. No, there is no pump, but it does make the air flow more direct with less friction. I've seen dynos before and after things like this and it will usually show a small improvement. Mind you, a very small improvement, none the less it was there. But again, it has to be done in a way your not getting any leaks anywhere, or else the effect it quite in the negative direction. And for a non exempt car, the positive effects don't out way the pain in the ass to swap most this crap back and forth every 2 years. Even the carb, on stock internals on one of our L blocks. Your looking at what 10bhp? Jus a couple of HP if that from the other stuff. I understand if its pre smog maybe, the the benefits don't out weight the hassles IMO.
  2. Well, removing things like the air pump and egr can gain you about 5-10 HP.... If done right. If not done right, you create vacuum leaks losing power in the end. We all know how changing the carb can increase power too. This 'it does no good' isn't true if it's done right.
  3. No you are 100% right Mike. It's sad but true. Anytime I make an 'illegal' smog change, I make sure I can easily swap it out every 2 years. I live in Santa Barbara county, which some how has more strict laws than Los Angeles. I've learned the tricks to get around the games.
  4. It was $700 min you had to spend trying to pass smog, and you could get out of it for a year. They were doing something to try and stop this, not sure if it ever went through.
  5. Crap, ya board. Always called them bureau and the name kinda stuck for me lol.
  6. You gotta know the rep. They're becoming skittish in my area cause the po's have been doing stings on reps. 2 of them have lost their smog license last year because of this. Sad really. Why I bought a 72. Fuck smog
  7. http://www.bar.ca.gov/80_BARResources/02_SmogCheck/Program_Areas.html Look at the PDF map. Everywhere has smog requirements. Minimum requirement it to just smog it when there's a change of ownership which is what will need to be done minimum when buying a truck like this. The change of ownership areas are pretty rural, and in ca, you have to provide proof of residence before you can register in said area. Trust me, I looked into it when I had my 86 and looking for ways around the engine swap rules.
  8. Wrong. Everywhere in ca has smog requirements. This includes visual and emmisions. Some are a little more slack on emmisions testing as laws slightly vary county to county, but all EVERY county in ca has smog. Carb means California Air Research Bureau. Look at the link I gave you, it has a microphiche of all our Datsuns, and you can look up what you need. If you want an OEM Hitachi, PM me, I have one that needs a rebuild, but is pretty complete. It'll come with the air filter and most of the mounting hardware. I used to work at a smog shop as a rep about 10-12 years back. Laws haven't changed much, so I'm pretty well versed in ca smog laws.
  9. Exedy is one of the best priced clutch kits out there. What I have on my L20b and my KA24. I have absolutely tortured the one on the KA and it's still going strong. And this is just the stage 1 organic. If this is for the street, you don't want to go much harder of a clutch as it will chatter and just down right kill your leg.
  10. http://www.carpartsmanual.com/ If it helps, this'll give you the part numbers you'll need.
  11. You need all the original equipment... Working. Your best bet is eBay and junkyards to get what you need. If you want part numbers, look here: http://www.carpartsmanual.com/ You can get most of what you'll need still as it's a '79.
  12. If you ground it, try not to ground yourself to it. It F@#$ing hurts lol.
  13. Yes 1342. Have you checked if plug no 1 is sparking? Oh, real common thing to miss... Check your points. Could be either corroded or or even adjusted wrong.
  14. The glycol in antifreeze is supposed neutralize all the crap from tap water, but unfortunately not all of it. You can't use distilled water though 'cause lacking all the minerals to allow it to cool properly. Running tap water through a filter is the best you can do without wasting a lot of money on purchased water.
  15. Lol, just ordered a 3 core Koyo about 2 hours ago. :)
  16. Ah, that explains the part number difference. That's an easy fix, just a longer hose for my overflow.
  17. Just a quick question for y'all. My 521's Radiator got a small leak. Looking to replace it with aluminum. Will I be able to use a radiator for a 510? I can alter the mounting it it's not too majorly different. I did check and they're different part numbers, so just wanted to be sure before spending $300+ Thanks
  18. Well, just swapped out the distributor. It was easier than I thought it would be. :)
  19. Yes, it's a mechanical noise for sure. It's specifically coming from the distributor, loudest directly from the Diaphragm. I used my stethoscope on it to get exactly where the sound was coming from. While making the noise, the diaphragm was vibrating too. The noise going away when I put the hose back on very well might have been either a coincidence, or maybe the hose is just absorbing the extra vibration enough to kill the sound. Or a possibility the hole that the hose covers is where the squealing is being amplified some how, and the hose is diverting the noise some how. I know these are all possibilities of why the noise started, but what in the Dizzy can make a squealing / whining noise? Is it something that can be fixed (relatively easily if possible), or should I just bin the thing and find out how to install the non points one I have? P.S. If anyone links me to a walk through on swapping to a pointless distributor, I'll owe you one :)
  20. I know the hose doesn't have a leak, it's only like 6 months old. It wouldn't surprise me even a little if the diaphragm is shot. I'll give the vacuum test a shot when I get home tonight. I have a CDI one ready to go on if this bugger is dying. I just need to do a little research on how to install it first.
  21. Most posting a question about my distributor. This is on my L20b. I'm still running the points distributor. Specifically, getting the squeel from the vacuum advance. I noticed it happened when the vacuum hose had fallen off. I put it back on and the noise slowly went away. Just curious if anyone has experienced this? And what might be the cause, mostly if I need to replace something before something gets damaged. Any input would be fantastic. Thanks in advance.
  22. I was gonna say. Glad for the clarification. Lol
  23. Give a pic where it's leaking from. Are you using a new gasket? The sohc, everything should seal pretty easily.
