Is this Weber really that great?

Hello Everyone,

Been lurking for a bit.  Jumping in.  This is my 78'.  Pretty good running truck.  Mostly original.  I like that.  Somewhere along the way someone tossed the original carb for a Weber.  It runs fine.  But it kind of spoils an otherwise well preserved engine bay.

1.  Is this Weber really better?

2. If I wanted to make it OEM, where should I source one?  Ebay?  New?  Rebuild a used one?  I rebuilt the Hitachi in my Courier.  I'm not afraid.

Thanks in advance.

Erin

Weber is slightly larger so probably gives a performance edge.

But you have to give up the stock air filter and the ATC (air temperature control) that mixes outside air ducted from in front of the radiator with air warmed by the hot exhaust to provide 100F air all year round. The ATC prevents carburetor icing in near freezing damp fog or rain weather. There is also a sensor and an air bleed in the air filter to correct an over rich idle in extreme heat conditions.

The Weber has a very small expensive air filter and runs on whatever air temperature is under the hood.

The Hitachi carburetor's secondary is vacuum controlled and opens automatically as needed. The Weber opens progressively the farther you step on the gas. While the Weber is simple and less complicated the Hitachi is not but drives better, is quieter gets better MPG and makes use of the pollution controls. Most of which have zero effect on performance other than the belt driven air pump which all owners should throw away. But you might need it if you have smog testing. The Weber won't pass the visual inspection and won't work with the pollution controls.

I consider period mods to be appropriate and acceptable. As long as it was installed properly, with no wires or hoses out of place, I'd keep it. I mean in regards to your originality concern. Maybe look into installing a modified stock air filter. That will look more appropriate.

Cool truck!
