Kingcab
I'm thinking about putting a z22 head and front on the l20b... any thoughts?... 1 Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Thought you has a Z22 engine in your 720. 1/ You'll have a Z20 after, with a 7.27 compression, a very poor idea. The reason is the Z heads are about 12cc larger in the combustion chamber than the L heads. The Nissan built Z20 uses flat top pistons to keep the compression up around 8.5. 2/ In addition the Z head does not make power above 3K like the L series. 1 Quote Link to comment
Kingcab
Could I bolt on the camshaft from the l20b and put it in the z head? 1 Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
No. Cams are totally different in how they operate the valves even though the lift and overlap timing are the same. The Z series heads don't breath that well. A much better breathing L head on a Z series block is a better idea and L.Zs are commonly done. Compression is also higher with a smaller combustion chamber L head. The block needs to be re-aligned into the L series position to leave room on the driver;s side for both manifolds. This is turn requires an L series transmission or swapping an L series transmission front case onto the Z transmission to convert it. This needs a lot of thought and research first though. I'm currently building a Z24 with an L head. Basically making an L24, an L24B actually, as there already is an L24 6 cylinder. The timing chain needs to be lengthened and it also needs L series engine brackets to position in the L series position and an L oil pan..... things like that. This in a very basic sense is just a stroker L20B the extra 400cc is a 20% increase in power so if an L20B is 93 hp this one will be close to 20 extra HP if you include the compression increase. 1 Quote Link to comment
Kingcab
I know I sounds like a dummy asking all these questions but I'm just trying to figure out what kind of a build I want to do. I really appreciate all your feedbacm!! 1 Quote Link to comment
Kingcab
I'd also like to see what ot would take to swap a l28 into the 720 and of it would be worth the time and build 1 Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
They don't fit, plain and simple. You would have to cut out the fire wall and loose your heater or move the rad into the bed. Besides there are 4 cylinder engines that make as much power (or more) get better mileage, weigh much less and FIT. 1 Quote Link to comment
Kingcab
Again just trying to get ideas on what I want to do... what would you recommend swapping into the 720 for an easy ish fit with more horses As this is my drift truck build 1 Quote Link to comment

bottomwatcher
Go to the how to section on the forum. There is a whole write up on putting a KAde in a 720. 1 Quote Link to comment
Charlie69
Time, space, tools, knowledge, and money would be a good start. Search and read as there are different approaches to the same end. Quote Link to comment
Kingcab
I have a w58 peanut head stock on my l20b whatt other heads come stock on l20b and what one would be best to use? Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
How do you know it's a closed chamber head? Have you removed it an looked? The W58 was used on all '78-'80 L20Bs. Prior to that, the U67 was used on the '75-'77 engines. The earliest use of an L20B was (I believe) the '74 610 and it had an A87 head which was commonly used on the earlier and smaller L18. The U67 and W58 are basically the same head but the W58 had round exhaust ports where the U67 has square ones. There's no advantage switching the head. 1 Quote Link to comment
Charlie69
I firmly believe the U67 head to be the best all around L20B head for a daily driver. Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
I do too. You can convert it to work with a later water cooled intake by drilling two small holes and the square exhaust ports will work nicely with the earlier L16 cast iron header. What I meant by no advantage was if you already have the W58, changing to a U67 just isn't worth the bother. Quote Link to comment
