280Z engine timing issue

Recommended Posts

I'm sorry for posting this as I know it's been covered a bunch! I have some pictures here of the crank on TDC along with the cam. My question is, is my distributor pointing to the right spot? The rotor seems like it points a little before #1 and I was wanting a second opinion! Also the reason it all came apart is the notorious timing chain tensioner :) but I do have the timing chain tool now! So I had to take the chain and oil pump out and I followed FSM putting it back together. The car runs but not anything like it should!

As long as you put it back together as it came apart, the timing won't be affected. Due to the slight advance set for timing, the rotor should be just on or slightly after the #1 plug lead on the cap. The rotor should be slightly counter clockwise past #1.

If you are at TDC unbolt your distributor and look in the hole. The spindle should look like this...

If not 11:28 (or 25) drop the oil pump and reset the spindle till you get this.

when you installed the timing chain, were you careful to set the bright link on #1 of the upper sprocket? There is also a mark to line up on the lower sprocket. Your ignition timing may be correct but I suppose your cam timing could be off if the upper and lower sprockets weren't positioned correct.
