Crashtd420
Top looks got.... dot on the lower look just a head of the link.... that tells me the crank need to be backed up just a little.... Your probably a half a link ahead on the crank tdc Quote Link to comment
Crashtd420
On the front of the block down by the crank sprocket is there a little mark also... that should be a tdc indicator also.... Quote Link to comment
Trod8812
What does that look like Quote Link to comment
Crashtd420
You could again probably rotate the cam forward a little to let that link jump down by the crank then back it up to the notch and see what you got... Quote Link to comment
Trod8812
I backed the crank a little and it’s in the center now on the crank sprocket Quote Link to comment
Crashtd420
What does that look like I think its just a dot or a notch like the cam sprocket has.... don't think I have a pic.... Quote Link to comment
Crashtd420
I backed the crank a little and it’s in the center now on the crank sprocket I think your good then.... install your guides and tensioner and you should be set Quote Link to comment
Trod8812
But if I turn the cam until they both match up then it looks like this Quote Link to comment
Crashtd420
I backed the crank a little and it’s in the center now on the crank sprocketAnd the top didn't move right.... Quote Link to comment
Crashtd420
Probably just pulled a little forward getting the chain on.... Quote Link to comment
Trod8812
That’s what it looks like when I turn the cam. If I leave the cam lined up with the v notch and turn the crank it’s just barely before the piston stops coming up Quote Link to comment
Crashtd420
Can you take a pic of the crank sprocket from the front and a little bit looking down Quote Link to comment
Crashtd420
I still think your ok.... if it was me I would install the tensioner and guides... rotate the motor and come back to you current position and check the marks.... Quote Link to comment
Crashtd420
Ya I don't see that little mark like I saw on my L16.... Either way links are aligned. Quote Link to comment
Crashtd420
Looks good to me.... Quote Link to comment
Trod8812
I’ll find out one I fire it up Quote Link to comment
Crashtd420
Yes you will.... good luck finishing it up and firing it up... not a bad idea to put some oil on the chain and other things while it's open.... doesn't hurt to do... guarantees it has some lubrication when you first start cranking... datzenmike
Are now correct. You can't really check the V notch to the line on the cam thrust plate until you have the timing cover on and can accurately set TDC using the timing scale. To do so, all the slack must be on the passenger side where the tensioner is. To get this, the engine must be turned by the crank bolt, puling down on the timing chain keeping the driver's side tight as you bring the engine to TDC. You must not turn the engine backwards to set TDC or you will introduce slack on the driver's side. If you over shoot past TDC back the crank up well before TDC and try again. Might take 4-5 tries but bring to TDC while turning in a clockwise direction only.... and stop. Quote Link to comment
banzai510(hainz)
like I said one can put the front cover on to have TDC cked. remember go clock wise with tension on the chain and put to Zero on crank then ck the cam timming. Now I noticed chain said made in USA. I only use Japan made chains.. I cant verify it totally made correct but if you put the brite link on the dimplea and shows the sprocket adv then maybe move it that half link back and do the timming front cover ck again. This is how I would do it with a non marked chain. remember to not rotate the chain /crank Couter clock wise. it has to be clock wise datzenenmike post above is how it SHOULD be and line up with marks. #2 sprocket setting is L20 usually Quote Link to comment
Trod8812
How would I check TDC with the timing cover on? What’s the timing set? Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
The crank pulley has a v notch in it that lines up with the timing scale near the alternator? Quote Link to comment
banzai510(hainz)
you watch my vid? it will anwser your own question if you watched it. put cover on with the timming plate and dial it up to zero on the crank whle during the crank clockwise tull it hits zero mark then look at the cam sprocket and see where it at.(vid explains it) so watch it before you shame yourself anymore. But its on the vid before I tear the motor down on how to do it. to check put cover on loosely and timming plat and ck it you almost have it your right there. it will runs that way but not be optimal 1 Quote Link to comment
