datswassup619
newbie here, when starting in 1st gear it seems like the axle is hopping, all other gears are fine. looked at 'pumpkin' and shows signs of leak. should I just get some generic gear oil? could it be the driveshaft? any advice would be great, thanks! 1 Quote Link to comment
datson4life
Check oil level on both transmission and diff. And check the driveline for defects to start. Ive used good silicone for the diff when i had leaks cause im not sure if gasket are available. Never checked to be honest 2 Quote Link to comment

Possibly your clutch is bad... but first rule out some other things that are easy and cost nothing. Check the wheel nuts are tight. Laugh if you want, but it happens. It's also an easy fix to tighten them. Secure the vehicle and raise one wheel and place in neutral. Climb under and turn the driveshaft by hand. At the differential U joint, it should not move side to side or up and down. If the vehicle is secure don't be afraid to tug on it firmly. It should only turn. Now do the U joint at the rear of the transmission, same thing. Now try the one in the middle near the rubber ring that supports it in place. If that rubber ring supporting the driveshaft is rotted away, it will need replacing. Visually inspect the leaf spring ends where they bolt to the frame and the large U bolts where the springs and the axle are bolted together. Are the shock absorbers on, tight and in good shape? Top up the differential with GL-5 90w oil. Then de-grease with brake cleaner and keep watch daily to see where the oil is coming from. 2 Quote Link to comment
banzai510(hainz)
just fill it. all leak abit by now. unless its the axle seal leaking on to the brakes then you need the outer seal. 1 Quote Link to comment
4perrev
It's like a Harley and VW. If she's leaking, you know you have oil in it!!! No, I'm with Mike up top on this. Check all the goods for wear and replace as necessary. Just did all my U-joints and it was $21 bucks and about 2 hours!! World O' difference. Quote Link to comment
