Cordova Kustoms
Ok stupid question. I put a D4K distributor in my 73 620 with the stock stock L16 and it runs good but not 100%. Problem is I have no idea if I have the advances hooked up right. I hear one is for advance and one is retard and one takes ported vacuum and the other manifold and shit I dunno which is which. And as good as it runs it's not quite right. Any help would be MUCH appreciated thanks... Quote Link to comment
banzai510(hainz)
how about try one then the other or dont hook them up and see what you get. should be ez to figure out with a timming light and rev up the motor and see what the timming does. Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Two vacuum advances??? No such thing. No Datsun distributor ever had a vacuum 'retard'. The DK4 distributors are for an L20B engine. Look on the body of the distributor for the part number it will start with 22100-????? This number will identify what it came out of. Quote Link to comment
banzai510(hainz)
MIke I thought soembody said the 280zx turbo had the 2 ports on those distributors. under boost it would retard Maybe they made a 4 cyl version? Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Banzai... the 280zx turbo engines use a special EI dizzy with a module with two extra wires on the side. Obviously the six cylinder dizzy won't work on a 4 cylinder engine but someone might swap the module. It needs the EFI's ECU to work out the advance/Retard. If this module is used on a 4 cylinder the timing will retard up to 10 degrees as the revs go up. As the OP mentions this is a 620 (L4) and ported and manifold vacuum I had to assume it wasn't a 280zx dizzy OR the turbo 12-93 module. I also asked him to get the part number off the side so we can see if single, dual points or one of the two EI dizzys. Quote Link to comment
Cordova Kustoms
It's part number 22100 H9701. Almighty Google says it's from an 80 310. Where I have the timing set now it's cutting out on the freeway like a misfire but only at higher rpm's.... Quote Link to comment
banzai510(hainz)
Where I have the timing set now Ok whats it that timming at idle? Is the distribtor crank to the farthest end of the timming slot? a L series motor with a #10 distributor?????? Guess anything is possible but thats not a L series distributor.. Photos would help. maybe this is a modded 310 dist woith a L series lower Quote Link to comment
Cordova Kustoms
No clue where it's at because it won't get out of its own way if I set it to spec. It's a 80 310 according to Google. I can just eliminate the vacuum altogether but would like to TRY and make it right? Hahh... 1 Quote Link to comment
banzai510(hainz)
ok ill repeat Ok whats it that timming at idle? Is the distribtor cranked to the farthest end of the timming slot? I have run with out the vacuum adv hooked up and still should be drivable Quote Link to comment
Cordova Kustoms
The timing is actually past the marks where it runs best. I probably have an advance issue. Or retard issue depending how you look at it..I'll disconnect both and see how it does and where it ends up at timing wise. I'll try and post a picture from the home computer this evening. Cordova Kustoms
And I still adjust in either direction I forgot to mention.... Quote Link to comment
banzai510(hainz)
after you try that with it disconnected try to find TDC on the crank and look where the rotor is pointing at on the distributor if it right on or say in the 10deg mark or so. if pointing inbetween say 1 and 3 plug wires then its a tooth off I say the the timming slots just wont get you there. Im thinking maybe its off a tooth Quote Link to comment
Cordova Kustoms
Ahhhhh ok I see....didn't think of that. 1 Quote Link to comment
cruznude
This is correct. I just took my 79 620 to a carb specialist and I was having all kinds of problems and come to find out , I waas just slightly off on my timing and my distributor placement. a quick 170.00 and now I smoke em in 2nd gear from the take off. I have a 5 speed and never use first gear. It really does pay to have someone whose trade and educated do this work. Quote Link to comment

There should only be one vacuum advance hose from distributor to the carb. This needs pictures. Quote Link to comment

datzenmike
I'm sure it's not. http://community.ratsun.net/topic/54932-photobucket-ratsun/ http://community.ratsun.net/topic/691-how-to-post-pictures-and-keep-online-photo-albums/ Quote Link to comment
D52E
I'm not sure where this distributor came from. It was in a Datsun parts stash when I bought a 510. As you can see it has an advance and retard port. Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
That distributor, 22100-H9701, IS for an '80 A series engine and should have the matchbox on the side and a drive gear on the bottom but the vacuum advance on it is for the '81 E15S front wheel drive E series engine that is driven from the cam on the back of the head and does not have a drive gear on it. The correct vacuum advance for an '80 A series engine is... 22301-H9501 or 22301-H9801 The dual one you have is.... 22301-21M00 or 22301-23M00 (vacuum control assy) This has likely been rebuilt and the wrong vacuum advance installed.
