Justin Tawney
okay. so my dads Nissan xterra randomely stalled while on the freeway like it was running out of gas filled up 2 days before he got off parked it in a parking lot cranked but wouldn't start next day I replaced the fuel filter drove it home started stalling again when accelerated acts like its not getting gas and goes blub blub replaced fuel pump and another fuel filter its getting spark and fuel but still the same problem takes forever to start then it stalls and after idling 10 minutes of almost normal running it starts to blub again when it is accelerated. anyone know what is wrong? my dad also got in a wreck in it about a week before rear ended someone on the right side not very much damage bumer and fender were bent if that has anything to be with that. HRH
Do you have any check engine light on? 2000 is new enough where most things are monitored. Quote Link to comment
Justin Tawney
no check engine light Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Turn the key on... does the check engine light bulb light up???? Quote Link to comment
Justin Tawney
all of the lights turn on.. but when its started no check engine light. Quote Link to comment
tr8er
I've seen these lose timing. The accident is suspicious though. And I'd presume the timing would trigger the check engine light. Yo could disconnect something like the 02 sensor next time it starts to see if the check engine light works. Quote Link to comment
Justin Tawney
I heard it could be some flasher bulb inside the dizzy making the whole thing needing replaced. im going to take it to a mechanic my family knows monday hell diagnose it for free. if I can get it started and stay running 3 or 4 miles. but I will check the o2 sensor thing tomorrow. MicroMachinery
This happened to a customer's 00' Xterra that came in a while back. We replaced the distributor with a used one from a wrecking yard and it cleared it up. About a year later, he came back with the same issue. This time, he shelled out the cash for a brand new dizzy. After installation, the problem vanished. Been good ever since. Quote Link to comment
Justin Tawney
how much would a new dizzy be for it do you know? Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Dude, you need to figure out what's wrong first. It may be the dizzy...it may not. Doctors don't cut your leg off because you complain about a sore knee. He checks it and finds out it's your shoes that are causing it. Quote Link to comment
Justin Tawney
I know I know. I was just getting an estimate in cost if it was that. and I have it in a mechanics shop looking at it right now. they have nt got back to me yet. Quote Link to comment
Lee R
Check the MAF sensor. If it will sit overnight and start the next day, idle for a few minutes like nothing is wrong then cut out, rough idle to where you need to feather it to keep it going.....that is what happened to me before and another friends Nissan. Both were the MAF and both had the same symptoms as you. Cheap and easy place to look and test first. Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Surely this thing stores fault codes. Get someone with a reader or what ever to down load the codes. Quote Link to comment
Justin Tawney
it was a cam sensor. 400 bucks for the shop to fix it. Quote Link to comment
metalmonkey47
That's strange. Usually when you see a cam sensor fail on an OBD2 car you'll get a CEL and cam/crank correlation codes. Guess this was one of those rare occurrences. Quote Link to comment
Justin Tawney
the next day after they replaced the cam sensor it was still acting up it was in the shop until a week ago they replaced the distributor and it ran fine. Quote Link to comment

jwerty1
the cam sensor is part of the dizzy, not a separate sensor Quote Link to comment
