How the hell you guys priming the system with the crank worm gear on? Cranking with the starter is the only way no?

I did mine by hand out of the truck.

Filed it up, used  huge screwdriver and turned it until I pumped about a quart through it, and without turning it over, slid it into place. Voila

I use a weed/bug sprayer, and fill with about 4qts. of oil. Take the sprayer nozzle off the end of the hose, and install a brass fitting that will thread in where the oil pressure sending unit goes. Pump it up, crack a beer, and wait for the engine to prime. I turn the crank about 2 full revolutions(by hand) in 4 stages as the oil level in the sprayer drops. The remaining .5qts I pour over the valve train and timing gear.

**update**

engine was running great no noise then the screeching and knock under valve cover came back when i add oil the noise goes away for a few minutes. Went ahead and bought an oil pressure tester and it was reading 0 pressure. Did a compression test to play it safe. All 4 cylinders are reading 140 psi. Any ideas???? Thanks in advance guys!!!

I don't know the history of the motor, but it could have a loose oil pickup or a missing/loose oil galley plug. Is it leaking anywhere? Does it have oil in the cylinders? How about oil in the water? Or water in the oil?

If you have had the oil pan off, maybe you forgot to tighten the oil pickup or install the gasket.

Picked it up as a running motor, i haven't taken the oil pan out did have a some water in the oil but i went ahead and put a new head basket in. And changed the oil. As far as i can tell there hasn't been any leaks

Does the motor spin with the flywheel and clutch attached? Does the trans spin by itself in or out of gear. Did the motor come with a flywheel? If not, which one did you install?

C'mon man, we're obviously not getting all the info. Somewhere something really simple is happening, I guarantee it.
