datzenmike
Remove the spindle and use a drill and a long screwdriver shank. Quote Link to comment
metalmonkey47
How the hell you guys priming the system with the crank worm gear on? Cranking with the starter is the only way no? I did mine by hand out of the truck. Filed it up, used huge screwdriver and turned it until I pumped about a quart through it, and without turning it over, slid it into place. datsun1973
The gear works well. The thread on here says u can't use cranks from other l series engines but all u have to do is grind the sides of the ends a little to fit through the pump. Ended up using one from the old l16 Quote Link to comment
banzai510(hainz)
You go to remember to redo TDC when you reinstall the dizzzy. I just put thick oil in the pump. Pump oil thru the oil filter hole to the front cover add soem oil there and right before start up I pour oil on cam and down the chain. prime the fuel pump also by hand so the carb has gas and your squirting. usuaully its alot quicker to start up Quote Link to comment
MicroMachinery
How the hell you guys priming the system with the crank worm gear on? I use a weed/bug sprayer, and fill with about 4qts. of oil. Take the sprayer nozzle off the end of the hose, and install a brass fitting that will thread in where the oil pressure sending unit goes. Pump it up, crack a beer, and wait for the engine to prime. I turn the crank about 2 full revolutions(by hand) in 4 stages as the oil level in the sprayer drops. The remaining .5qts I pour over the valve train and timing gear. Quote Link to comment

datsun1973
**update** engine was running great no noise then the screeching and knock under valve cover came back when i add oil the noise goes away for a few minutes. Went ahead and bought an oil pressure tester and it was reading 0 pressure. Did a compression test to play it safe. All 4 cylinders are reading 140 psi. Any ideas???? Thanks in advance guys!!! racerx
Maybe bad oil pump Quote Link to comment
datsun1973
That's where i was leaning towards but wouldn't there still be some oil pressure registering with a bad pump? Quote Link to comment
banzai510(hainz)
put truck over the grass. pull the oil filter. give a couple cranks on starter. see if oil shoots out of not the oil pump. if yes try another oil filter. Quote Link to comment
racerx
purolator, NAPA or WIX filter if good...stay away from FRam, heard too many bad things. Quote Link to comment
datsun1973
Would low oil viscosity also cause this i just realized i put my golfs oil in without noticing 5w30...... Quote Link to comment
Stoffregen Motorsports
I don't know the history of the motor, but it could have a loose oil pickup or a missing/loose oil galley plug. Is it leaking anywhere? Does it have oil in the cylinders? How about oil in the water? Or water in the oil? If you have had the oil pan off, maybe you forgot to tighten the oil pickup or install the gasket. Quote Link to comment
datsun1973
Picked it up as a running motor, i haven't taken the oil pan out did have a some water in the oil but i went ahead and put a new head basket in. And changed the oil. As far as i can tell there hasn't been any leaks Quote Link to comment
izzo
even using 530 oil, there would be some pressure. Quote Link to comment

Did the motor come with a flywheel? If not, which one did you install? C'mon man, we're obviously not getting all the info. Somewhere something really simple is happening, I guarantee it. datzenmike
What ever you do, DO NOT RUN IT AGAIN!!! until this is figured out. Cam sounds like no oil getting in there. Quote Link to comment
