Daryl
I need your guys wise help, for i am in a pickle! Here's the issue, I am getting a 1981 Datsun 510 with a blown z20 engine and the guy i am getting it from gave me the option to replace or rebuild. The question is can the block be removed and can a L26 be dropped in? Any help would be great. Quote Link to comment
Farmer Joe
nah. that 4 vs 6 cylinder. the l26 is 2 cylinders longer than the z20... find another z20-22-24, and put it in... Quote Link to comment
Daryl
In the end i am left with the only option of replacing the engine with the same "z" engine. I'll throw a z24 in it. thanks Farmer Joe. Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
An L24/26/28 can be done but ruins the car. Sealik had one, swapped it back to 4 cylinder. Also the L series motor will need an L series transmission. It won't bolt (properly, that is) to the Z series transmission in the car now. I assume that you have a carb Z20? Easiest thing is a Z series motor transplant. The Z20 and Z22 are identical other than displacement. The Z24 (only found in the 720 truck and early D21 Hardbody) is 3/4" taller than the Z20/22 motors but can fit. The Z24i found in the Hardbody has fuel injection so best to swap a carb and intake on it for your use. Most stuff on the Z20/22 will fit a Z24. Quote Link to comment
INDY510
Did they stop doing SMOG tests in California?? .... ...... .. didn't think so ..... any motor out of ANY car sounds better than a straight six 81 510 Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
An L20B is a good motor, but you still need to address the transmission. I assume it's a 4 speed? Quote Link to comment
Sealik
An L24/26/28 can be done but ruins the car. Sealik had one, swapped it back to 4 cylinder. Yeah....although the bored L28 is going back in, eventually..... :hyper: Firewall is already MIA......so why not. Just have one more part to acquire...P90 or P79 head Quote Link to comment
Daryl
Sadly, it has 3 spd Automatic in it. Quote Link to comment
bonvo
your in california if you ever want to smog the thing again you need to stick to the z series you cannot go with an older engine as it is illegal and wont pass you can go newer so a z24 but not older Quote Link to comment
Daryl
Dam smog! Cool, was planning to do that. Quote Link to comment
Tristin
An L20B is a good motor, but you still need to address the transmission. I assume it's a 4 speed? For an L block, he can just swap an L front case onto the Z trans. Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
As it turns out it's an '81 and there were no 4 cylinder L motors. Quote Link to comment
Tristin
I thought the last year for the L20 was the '81... hmmm Edit: Years were mixed up. I see they stopped in '79. Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
The '80 720 was it for the 4 cylinder and '84 for the six. Quote Link to comment
