Another 620 KA24DE swap, slow but steady...

These are just some pics of how the engine landed in the engine bay. I used the stock mounts from the 620 (rubber pillows) and 240sx metal brackets. The fit was quite good but i did not like it, so ended up bugging ]2eDeYe for some mounts - the mounts put that bastard engine right in its place. Sits much lower and still gives me plenty of clearance. I highly recommend picking up a set of metal mounts from him, you will not be dissapointed. Ok enough advertising, i'll post pix of the fitment later.

Original 240sx mounts would not fit because of the little metal knob designed for the L series engines. Well i cut them off as you can tell in the pix below and when i got my new mounts i regretted it, but i'll have to wait and see if this causes any issues.

Honestly don't know what we were working on at this point, might have been cuting off the "Glushas" or exhaust in english - LOL

Working on the center links. It was nearly impossible to get the balljoints out. Finally i got them sorted out after the links were out of the car, but in the end we cut off the centerlink and most of the balljoints except for the few that gave in to our demands.

What a mess......got quite hammered that day, going in to work the following day was tough - not doing that again, or at least not for a long time.

Trying to marry the transmission with the crossmemeber, eventually engine was lifted back out a little bit to replace the mounts. I must say, this was the esiest in engine bay transmission to engine mating process, we gently pushed the transmission and it just fell right into place. We started dancing around and laughing about it, it was like a fucking miracle as if it decided to hook itself up to the engine. Enough rambling, more OICS.

All this EGR crap is coming out so i have some beter fitment, i would love to leave it in but simply can't

At this point i had stopped working on the truck for about a week or so since the holidays were coming around and i was waiting on the mounts links etc.

 

Ths time gap gave me some time to clean up the rims and dismount the off roading tires.

Went to the cabin in Big Bear so i could snowboard.

On to the fuel pump.

 

But first here is a pic of how far back the transmission bolts up.

The black fuel line is for the return, ziptied for the most part and has a few bolt down straps but can't really remember where

UPDATE: IDIOT ALERT, I HAD THE PUMP GOING THE WRONG WAY, IT HAS TO POINT THE OPPOSITE WAY, pics below show you how not to hook it up.

This is an Airex E2000 fuel pump from what i remember. I think it flows 45gph, ran a black ground to the chassis and ran another black wire to the cabin for the CAM/AN box. Used 12ga wire hopefully that all worksout.

Seems like the stock slave might fit but i'm going to get a new one anyways.

Also got the driveshaft measured out so i can take it to the shop and have it shortened tomorrow.

 

This is for the noobs that don't know how to measure. Mesure from the back of the splines to the flange point, make sure the driveshaft is at the right angle and not on the ground like in the pics. This is just a reference point the blue glove indicates where to measure from. THe driveshaft shop will know what to do, just measure and provide the numbers they will sort this out, i've done it many times with custom shafts - thats what she said.

Oh and before i forget, this is what you do to the end of the driveshaft yolk. Cut off the dust shield otherwise it will not fit, and grind down the edges so its all nice and smooth. I used a dremel to do this and it came out quite good, angle grinder would be the preferred tool in this situation.

It is like night and day, even my friend Ted was excited about how well they fit together. Keep up the good work on the fabrication end for us noobie ratsun members haha.

looking good,on another note do you rent or you own your cabin in Big Bear,i was thinking of buying another house up there next year.

 

It's in the family trust. So basically we use it whenever it's empty. The homes up there are quite cheap. Something decent is around $100K but you can get a small shack for less. I was thinking of getting another place on my own sometime later in life. But its a great getaway year round. In the summer it's cooler than it is in LA and in the winter it's nice to head up for some snow. If you got the money i would recommend it. :thumbup:

We own an A-frame cabin in Big Bear... its quite a great place. I love the snow in the winter and even the downhill cement track in the off season. We did a lot of house-boating on Big Bear Lake while I was growing up.

I'd probably run an actual ground to your fuel pump from the battery just to be sure there won't be any issues... rusty Datsun frame sucks for being a really good ground. Tail lights are one thing, fuel pump is another...

 

That is a very good point, i'm glad you mentioned it to me. I was eating dinner at a restaurant when i saw the post and a big light bulb turned on in my head. LOL.

Yeah we also have a rental accross the street which pays for the cabin's utilities etc. And also had 2 lots but sold one. If you buy it cash it might be a very good investment as a rental or if you can manage to sell it when the value appreciates. As for buying with a loan i would not bother because you would be upside down and the rental income would not cover the loan amount in such a low valued home. Plus you would have to put down a hefty amount to finance an investment property. I will definitely try to come out to the meet when i get this guy running. I had no idea that there was a meet for us datsun owners.

Well Sunday was a good day. Got a lot done, at least it seemed like to me. The wiring was a breeze since i used the CAN/AM box, and i would really recommend it to any Noobie doing an SR/KA/VG swap into a datsun. Since my KA is OBD-II I had to do a bit of research to make sure I was using the correct wires from the F3 plug. Have not started it but it should fire right up (fingers crossed). Here is the temporary wiring mess.

Had to unwrap the lower KA harness to remove the old + to the starter, going to use my new one that i got for the Datto.

Here are a few more OICs of the mounts etc. Going to do the clutch on the S14 tonight at a friend's shop/garage. Should be a real PITA to do but i'll be back to the dattsky by Friday. Today I took the driveshaft to be shortened and balanced. I made an error about the measuring part in my earlier post. You should really measure from the seal on the transmission to the carrier bearing not the flange. I was a bit hammered when i did the measurements earlier so makes sense why i would provide misleading info HAHA.

Well the clutch got done in the Nissan so i can focus on the datsun situation a bit more steadily. Hoping i can wrap up the engine etc by next weekend.

 

Not related to the KA swap but still content...haha.

Ok all is going well. Picked up the idler arms (steering arms, knuckles, shitsickles whatever). The welding looks awesome, this guy welded both sides and smoothed out the bolt side of the idler arm. I'm quite pleased with the work, even if i had a welder i would not be able to get such quality welds in such a tight space.
