Another 620 KA24DE swap, slow but steady...

Well ladies and gents I finally got my hands on a really good KA. Tomorrow i'll be yanking that guy out and bringing it home, and i'm hoping to do a thorough write up on this swap subject. I'm by no means an expert at doing swaps but i'll keep the picture gallery updated every step of the way. Stay tuned and you will not be disappointed and might even be able to chime in when i run into a wall head first. For starters here is my S14 RB25DET build that is still in the process.

Well here is the journey of the KA24DE. I gotta say i was a bit sad to part with the L18 but i have to move on with my plans.

Here is the KA sitting in the U-HAUL truck. That F150 had some serious TQ, put the pedal to the metal and it will light them up every time. It took us a good 2 to 2.5hrs to yank the KA out of a running 240sx. Sounded like it had some kind of a tick off throttle so I got a really good deal on the whole swap.

Here is Ted making sure the KA doesn't fly off the truck before we hit the freeway. We drove it a few miles just sitting on the tire with no straps but decided one big bump on the highway and it would either end up on the side or well it could only end up on its side....

So this is the L18 still sitting in the 620.

The original owner of this engine said it had bogging issues, sounded like a vacuum leak from what he described.....and leak it was

Most importat part of this swap is this damn harness, which requires a bit of soldering just from a glance.

Parking this KA was such a pain in the ass. Had to do it all alone and the cracked driveway would not allow me to move the Hoist.

But i finally made it.

Well it was time to yank the L18 from the truck. Of course i had to do this exercise solo.

And when you do things solo, this is what happens.

Not worried about this lip since im going to cut it off completely. But the booster almost got a kick of its life from the back of the transmission.

Since you have done a few ka swaps let me ask you a question. How did you run the return line to the tank and did youmhave to weld a nipple to the tank or is there a carb return hose that i could utilize? Also i was thunking of cutting the stock fuel line and using injection lines to go in and out of the inline pump about a foot past the tank. Is there a more clever way to do this? Thanks in advance.

I used the stock return line. I used the trucks original steel lines and I ran all new high pressure rubber fuel line. There are pictures in my build thread of where I mounted the pump and filters.

Did your pump come with those brackets or did you get those seperately? If seperate, where can I get a set? :)

The brackets came with the pump, but they are simply hardware store brackets LOL. I've seen them at Orchard Supply Hardware, might not carry them anymore. That answer is perfect, i just like to confirm thiings before i tackle something that has been done a million times. Finally got the power back on, so i can use a light tonight and check out the tank. I've looked through your build but i might have missed the pump mounting part, i'll check it out again to get some ideas. Thanks.

A bit more progress today. I figured the firewall lip is going to interfere with the back of the engine and decided to cut it off. Is this the right way to go about it? Absolutely not, it significantly weakens the structure of the firewall and may cause the engine to end up in your lap should you have a frontal collision. Well i went ahead and moved on despite knowing all this. Since the dremel did not its job i had to work the lip up and down with pliers after making an incision. And remember boys and girls, glasses and no gloves when working with rotating tools.

Something interesting I completely forgot about. Had this guy sitting at work for quite sometime, a friend got it for me for my birthday before I even bought my little 620. Original idea was 521 with a KA24E swap, but may be another day.

I don't think the value of the print is much higher than say $20 but it is one cool looking advertisement, can't wait to frame it and throw it up in my garage.

Ahh i see. Quite honestly i was not too sure if i would have to but i went ahead and did because i have some kind of a plug at the back that might interfere. Plus your mounts are way better for positioning than my mickey mouse combination.

Another update. No pix yet, i slotted the transmission crosmember holes, anyone done this before? How far back does it need to go? On another note, my distributor only has 4 wires, all of the swaps i have seen have a 5th wire going to an igniter....do i need to bypass the ecu and get a different distributor for this? Thanks in advance. Tomorrow i'll hopefully mount in the fuel pump.

UPDATE: The transmission member needs to be slotted just as far as i have it slotted. I'm sure drilling another hole would work the same but might be harder to align everything.

Few more updates with pix coming along soon. Got the wiring harness in place. I think it will help you guys while doing a ka swap. I was able to utilize the original wiring harness hole on the firewall but it took a bit of trial and error. Also trans holes are slotted and pix coming soon.

UPDATE: Trans hole slotting is in the update above. Here is how i stuck the harness through the hole. For the original 620 harness i used another hole parallel to the stock harness hole - it was plugged with a rubber grommet i'm assuming that was for my wiper wires?

AT LAST!!! Thanks to photobucket I can continue uploading OICs.

Got these badboys a few weeks ago, just can't install them yet. Need to get the rim situation sorted out because i'm guessing the caliper set up will not clear the stock rims -
