72' 521 question about 3rd gear clicking sound..

When I put my 521 in third gear I hear a clicking noise on one of the electric boxes. Someone told me it was to kick in the 2nd set of points when you put it in 3rd gear. Is this true or is there something else going on?

The relay is under the hood so I doubt you would hear it in the cab when at 3rd gear speeds. Any Idea where the sound is coming from??? Inside the cab??

I can hear under-hood relays click off and on in my Datsun pickup.

without it running you can hear it if the key is on. We don't think it is doing it anymore, but would that be a bad relay if it's not clicking anymore? What usually goes wrong with them if this is not happening?

Your distributor has two sets of points. The advance set is used to set your normal timing with a timing light. The second set are 4 degrees retarded. Motors produce less emissions when the timing is retarded but this isn't always best for performance. What you can do is disconnect the relay and the distributor will remain in the advanced state at all times.

The relay clicking is normal. If you are in third gear, part throttle, clutch out, the retarded set of points is activated. All other operating conditions, the engine runs on the advanced set of points.

The relay just connects the retarded set of points in parallel with the advanced set of points. So, if any part of the retarded points system fails, the engine continues to run on the advanced points.

I dont use the 2nd set of points. Just pull the wire that has the smaller condensor. I could never get it quite right myself and went to a single point L16 dizzy and then put a Pertronix in it
