Daredevil302
I got a tranny with the turbo motor I bought, the guy said it was a datsun 5 speed but the model numbers that i'm finding on the tranny don't match up. And will it work in my 280z Here are the pics of what's on it Quote Link to comment
ggzilla
Show us some pictures of the transmission, and not just of the numbers ... Quote Link to comment
ArchetypeDatsun
Any Z tranny works with with any L-6 engine that's if its a Z tranny. Is the tranny mated with the engine or is it separate? Early 5 speeds had different gearing than the later 5 speeds. Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Not a dogleg I think. Pre '80s 71B. Need pictures of the tailstock to be sure it's even a 5 speed and the front to tell if an L or not. You did say WITH a turbo motor and not ON and turbo motor, and as the 280zx turbo didn't use these transmissions.... it could be off of anything. Quote Link to comment
Daredevil302
Sorry about that, here's some more pics of it. Correct, it wasn't mated to the l28et, I knew it wasn't a t5 but the guy said it was a different datsun 5 speed. I just don't know what it is, if it is even a Datsun/Nissan tranny. datzenmike
Well it's an L 5 speed but with these pictures I can now tell you that it's newer and no older than an '80. Possibly from a 2wd '80 720, a 280zx or maybe from a Maxima. The crossmember on the floor in front of it beside the motor mount... was it on this transmission? If so, it's for a Z car Quote Link to comment
Daredevil302
Yeah that was on the transmission. Thank you, I didn't want to start pulling it apart if it were for some other car. Quote Link to comment
Alex Datsun
looks quite similar to my zx trans Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Wa hahaha they all look pretty similar to the zx trans. Quote Link to comment
Daredevil302
Now i'm looking for a rebuild kit, and I'm not sure which one to get since I don't know what model the tranny actually is. Is there a way that I could figure this out? Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Any build kit for an '80-'83 280zx non turbo FS5W71B will do. This one will have the smaller 56mm counter bearing and NOT the larger 62mm one if they ask. Quote Link to comment
Daredevil302
Okay great, thanks for all the help. Quote Link to comment
decoy12
I believe the serial number tells you the year and month for the transmission. 7 is the last number of the year (1977) and the X is the month (October), so it would be an early 5 speed. Quote Link to comment

See the gussets on the side of the tranny around the two bolts holding the two halves together, that is how the early types were made, 1980+ do not have these gussets, the transmission above doesn't have them gussets. This is true for the 3N71B automatic but I have never seen this mentioned in any Nissan FSM or anywhere else. Quote Link to comment
