converted_to_datsun
My tranny hasn't been soo good. I have an extra 4 speed but I want to put a 5 speed in so I was holdin out. But not anymore... I was driving in a parking lot today and there was a bang and the gears caught. I drove a little down the road and it would go fine than catch hard and one time it almost stopped. Then I got a tow truck to get home. So I guess it's time for the extra 4 speed. Sounds like the tranny right? Or could it be the rear end? Quote Link to comment
DAT510
After years of abuse the tranny finally quit... Didn't pay IT enough did you? Quote Link to comment
converted_to_datsun
Haha yea darn thing quit and I can't go anywhere Quote Link to comment
DISLEXICDIME
if not trans rear end. i have destroyed many l series transmissions and never had one do that. usualy they get so bad they dont shift or so loud you cant stand to be in the car. I take it it rolls fine in nutral ? go to pick and pull and look for a non turbo zx trans or a 78 79 620 or you could find a 720 5 speed and swap the bell but i am not sure if you would have to shorten drive line length. oh or you could use a 80 720 5 speed they had l20b's in them. converted_to_datsun
So you think it could be the rear end? It doesn't go well in neutral either. It rotates well then catches and stops. Trying to pull the drive shaft so I can trouble shoot but having trouble with the bolts Quote Link to comment
converted_to_datsun
Oh and the shaft rotates when the engine is running even in neutral Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Differential if the drive shaft turns. Good. That's easier to fix. The '79 had a 4.11 Quote Link to comment
ggzilla
That's what my pickup has done a time or two. Bang and then it won't go forward, back up a bit then it gets free. No growling/howling/whining thandfully. Haven't found the cause yet. Inspected the brakes, they look fine. So it's probably the rear end or transmission. Quote Link to comment
converted_to_datsun
Mine gets free then catches hard again. At one point before it started making noise I thought the spider years might have been welded so could have failed and caused the problems I've been having Quote Link to comment
ggzilla
Time to take it apart and inspect. I'm starting with the differential since it is easier to remove than the transmission. Quote Link to comment
converted_to_datsun
I'm probably gonna pull mine apart in a few minutes so maybe I'll have the answer... Or just more questions Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Just drain it.... If fucked, it will be obvious. If not, well you probably haven't checked the level or changed it or the tranny by the 'sound' of it so you can change it now.  It should have two liters in it not two cups. converted_to_datsun
Well the rear end is for sure the problem but the fluid was up to the fill hole. Could changing the fluid really stop it from catching? Quote Link to comment
wayno
Well the rear end is for sure the problem but the fluid was up to the fill hole. Could changing the fluid really stop it from catching? Not likely, but since it's a 620, you have a lot of choices in the wrecking yards, any 620 or 720 pumpkin will fit in your rearend housing, you just have to find the gearing you want. It is likely you have something getting into the gears, a bolt head from the ring gear, a tooth off one of the gears, you can pull the pumpkin out and find out, but I would have a rear pumpkin already ready to put in before I pulled it apart, that way it's a remove and replace situation. There is a chance that the gears were not damaged, and you might be able to fix yours, but you have to pull the pumpkin to find out. Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
The cross pin may be loose. Wayno 's right, get any '79 or '80 2wd or '81-'82 automatic truck. These will have the 4.11 you need to keep your speedo accurate. Quote Link to comment
converted_to_datsun
I TRYEd to pull the pumpkin but having trouble getting it out. Advice? Quote Link to comment
ggzilla
Pull the axles out about 8 inches, then undo the 10 pumpkin bolts and pull straight out the front. Quote Link to comment
converted_to_datsun
Oh ok I'll do hat thanks Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
You may have to slip a chisel or screwdriver blade between the diff and the housing to brake it away. Quote Link to comment
converted_to_datsun
It's free I just need to pull the axles... Need to borrow a floor jack first tho so not doing it yet. Unfortunately I had to buy a different daily driver so my Datsun is now only a project. I like my new truck but there's nothing like driving a Datsun... Happy but sad too Quote Link to comment
ggzilla
Floor jack? It's not that heavy. If need be use a milk crate and some 2x4s and ease it out. then let it down. Bolt it back up temporily, remove the four bolt behind each axle and pull them out. You will need to undo the brake lines and e-brake cable ends. Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
On the 620 you should be able to leave the e brake cables on, (barely) and slide the axles out just enough to disengage the splines. The hydraulic brake lines will have to be undone and the brakes bled when you are done. Support the axles so they don't rest against the grease seals inside the axle tubes. Quote Link to comment
converted_to_datsun
Pulled the stinking pumpkin... And yes it was bad and there were chunks of metal and teeth missing and that was a pain haha Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Half of all tranny problems is the rear end. ...trust me. Quote Link to comment
converted_to_datsun
At least I didn't rePlace the tranny. Any clue what the call the diff without axle housing on the pick and pull parts list Quote Link to comment
