pl521sss
My L18 Block just came from degreasing. Freeze plugs removed and shows rust around the outside of cylinder walls. It would be difficult to clean it up. Can I still salvage this block or is it normal to have this much rust over the life of the engine? Planning to use 280zx flat top pistons (86mm). Z-train
Most of it will be gone after hotanking. Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
I think it's like having tiny cracks, they do no harm but... best not to see or know about them. The second picture down looks like the block was drained and sat leaving a bath tub ring, I'm sure it will be fine but use a proper anti-freeze/coolant to prevent further rust. The p/o may not have, and this is the result. Perhaps it could be flushed out with something to loosen and get rid the scale? Quote Link to comment
pl521sss
Most of it will be gone after hotanking. I meant to say that it came back from the shop for hot tanking. And this is how it came back to me. Quote Link to comment
fiveNdime
Looks like you pulled that thing from the bottom of the ocean:lol: It shouldn't be like that after tanking it, at least every motor I have had tanked that had rust on it. Quote Link to comment
ssfwgn
some hot tanks use caustic acid, Its not very strong. I had a block hot tanked and it didn't even take the paint off. Quote Link to comment

Will try to bring it to the shop again and ask if they could do it again without charging me (yeah right). Never hurt to ask specially when you ask nicely. I hear people worrying about the cylinder walls when they bore out their cylinders. Same goes with rust, it takes away material from the outside wall. And with 86mm pistons, I sure hope it won't be a problem. Quote Link to comment
zed
hello everyone, I would try phosphoric acid on the inside of that rusted block. It's sold here (South Africa) cheap as 'galvanised iron cleaner' - but you can probably get a gallon from any industrial chemical shop. It's not dangerous stuff - you just pour it in, leave it overnight, pour out and see if enough rust is gone. You must immediately rinse out the acid from the block - or it will keep rusting. z Quote Link to comment
